Grandin Godleys return from African mission
Last year, Mr. and Mrs. Grandin Godley, Oakwood Park, Syracuse, spent several months visiting various missions in Africa. During their visit the couple made the acquaintance of a pilot and his wife in Wenbo Nyana, located in the central part of Zaire. The pilot and his wife were due for a leave of absence. Godley, who considered himself to be a bush pilot, stated that if he had a proper invitation he would consider it. Sometime later he received the proper invitation from Bishop O’Nema Fama, Central Zaire Conference of the United Methodist Church. Upon accepting the invitation, the Godleys left their Syracuse home and went to an area covered with forest, practically no roads with the only way to get to the area being to walk or fly. After arriving, Godley spent four weeks of training to receive his license to fly over the Zaire country. The plane he flew was a Cessna K of C to host homage to Mary The Milford Knights of Columbus Council 6323 will host a Pilgrim Virgin Family Hour of Prayer in homage to the Virgin Mary on the 125th anniversary of the declaration by Pope Pius IX of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, Decembers, 1854. The Holy Hour is set for November 5 at 7:45 p.m. and is open to the public. On display, during this service will be a picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This picture has been blessed by Pope John Paul 11. Our Lady of Guadalupe was declared by Pope Pius XII as Patroness of the Americas. Webster plans supper The United Methodist Church Women’s Society of North Webster will sponsor a ham and turkey supper at the church on November 10 at 5 p.m. This is an annual project for the women of the church. The menu will include two vegetables, dressing, potatoes, salad and pies, in addition to the ham and turkey. In this territory there are seven regions in which there are no paved roads and very few navigable sand roads. As a mission pilot, he was the means by which the church people and missionaries traveled to the schools and churches. His principal duty was to take the school coordinator around each month with the pay roll in Zaireian cash. He also moved pastors, district superintendents, school teachers, persons who needed to go to the hospital, plus visiting firemen, doctors, den tists and evangelists. medicine, goats, chickens, kerosene, gas, food and 1,800 baby chicks. No Electricity Many of the stations Godley visited had no electricity and only one area had piped water. If there was electricity, as in the case of the mission compound where Godleys lived, it was available for a maximum of 10 hours a week and they would go 15 to 30 days without water. In order to obtain water, one would have to travel to a nearby river with a pail, or store it in barrels. The Godleys stated the people in the area were extremely friendly and they were in an area which spoke four primary tribal languages. With the various languages, the major language Zairians spoke was French. There always was someone who

spoke English who met the plane and translated for Godley. Since the Godleys were there during the winter months the temperatures ranged from the mid 80 s during the day to the low 6O’s at night. They mentioned there was practically no rain and the sun shone only part of the day. Abundance Os Food Both Godleys remarked the food was not in short supply, but was expensive. With an abundance of fruit bearing trees in the forest, there were plenty of pineapples, papaya, avocados, banana’s roots and rice. The Syracuse couple also metioned there were a number of vegetables available but rice and bananas were the staple food. Godley has his license to fly in the United States and considers himself a well-trained pilot. But when he flew in Zaire there were no navagational controls. When he flew, all he had to go by were major rivers and the compass. He stated “The Lord rode with me on four special occasions.” While Mrs. Godley’s husband was out flying she would stay at the missionary compound, monitor the radio and keep close accounts of where her husband was, along with monitoring other planes in the area. She also supervised the residence where they lived. Such supervision included taking care of the chickens, making sure the food for a meal was out, plus a lot of hand sewing for other missionaries and tribal people. Each morning between 8 and 8:30 she would wait beside the radio and listen for any messages wl.ich would be for that area or would be relayed on to others, because of the weather and location. When the Godley s 19 weeks were up and the missionary pilot returned, the couple was presented with a number of gifts from the natives and others in the mission compound. Each of the gifts had a special meaning behind them, for instance Godley received a picture of an eagle, which symbolized the biggest bird and to the people that was the airplane. He also received an item that symbolized a chief which also alluded to his position as pilot. Mrs. Godley’s present was a hoe, since it is customary in Zaire that the women work in the fields. Before returning to Syracuse, the couple stopped in Switzerland for a short visit. “We thoroughly believe that on our Christian mission the Lord and Holy Spirit were with us. We could sense the prayers from those back home,” remarked the couple.
