C. - The emotional and desire factor are so much a part of football, that young players are (again this year) putting a reckless determination into winning. Fans, coaches and alumni traditionally put too much stress on it. On the same day recently, a Florida University player quit the game after suffering a serious brain concussion. A player at the University of South Carolina died in the dressing room and serious, permanent body injuries have been suffered by other players every week this season. Youngsters can be built up to such an emotional pitch by their elders that they recklessly disregard serious injury. With newspapers, television. 50,000 fans watching, coaches and an entire campus applying the pressure, what youngster is capable of viewing all this in perspective? What youngster can realize it’s just a game--that school and learning are vastly more important?

Kealtb Views (B SPORTS INJURIES ON THE INCREASE

Synthetic surfaces may in part be responsible for turf injuries. Although many health authorities tend to blame the problem directly on the characteristics of the surface, the American Chiropractic Association points out that much of the problem is the increased speed of the game which results from artificial surfaces. -• For example, in football, the synthetic turf increases running speed and foot gripping action. Thus, it sets the stage for higher collision forces between players, with resultant increase in the severity of the injury sustained. In timed straight line and slolom dashes, it has been reported that synthetic surfaces are approximately 20% faster than natural turf. While speed is one factor, two other factors are not to be overlooked which reflect their presence in injuries. Players are bigger, heavier and stronger than they were ten, twenty or thirty years ago. This is true in every stage of athletics — from grade school through college and into professional sports. For example, professional football statistics show an 11% increase in player weight over the past 30 years. Another factor is competitiveness. All teams, amateur and professional alike, are better organized, more aggressively managed, and more demanding of their players. Today, you have a stronger player, motivated to try harder, and with the surface to run faster. The result: he or she hits harder and falls harder. One of the problems also noted on fast-speed synthetic surfaces is less adjustment time. That is, with a better uniformity of surface, the player feels more

Open Basketball League meeting Tuesday at WHS

Wawasee High School will hold an organizational meeting for all teams interested in entering the 1979-80 WHS Open Basketball SAFETY SENSE FOR HALLOWEEN The fun and adventure of Halloween have been around for centuries. Neighborhood children out trick-or-treat-ing on “All Hallows’ Eve” probably aren’t aware of it, but they’re following a very old English custom called “going a souling,” where visitors went from house to house calling “a soul cake, a- soul cake, a penny or a soul Cake!” Before your children make the trick-or-treat rounds this year, be sure to review some of these basic Halloween safety rules: * Young children should be escorted by an adult on house-to-house calls; advise older children to stay in familiar neighborhoods and to avoid dark streets. * Ask your children to bring home all the candy and fruit they receive so you can give it your seal of approval. Make sure they eat a regular meal before they go out to discourage nibbling. * Halloween costumes should be fun and safe at the same time. To ensure your children’s well-being, dress them in new Kooky Spooks™ inflatable Halloween costumes. Available in six original cartoon characters whose faces appear on the playful inflatable headgear, these costumes are tons of fun for children of all ages. * Make sure your witches, ghosts, and, goblins are dressed warmly underneath their costumes. Be sure to choose an all-weather-proof costume that allows plenty of room for sweaters, coats, and free and easy arm movement.

secure running faster, and has less time to prepare or adjust for a fall. Doctors of chiropractic throughout the U.S. are reporting an increase in orthopedic injuries and structural health problems, many of which are attributable to high speed sports. While many professional teams are now retaining doctors of chiropractic on their staffs to treat sprains and strains and maintain the playing efficiency of their players, the problem is more widespread than professional sports can rectify. With more and more new stadiums being built, and even high school and college fields being covered with synthetic turf, the problem will no doubt increase. The major threat is not to the well-cared-for professional, but rather to the overlooked amateur, especially the child. A structural injury can affect a child’s growth, development and achievement. Os course, it is impossible to stand in the way of progress. We wouldn’t want to outlaw sports; we can’t breed smaller players; and, it’s doubtful that we will go back to pock-marked natural turf. The answer then is closer supervision, a tightening of playing rules, more protective safety equipment, and a greater attention to health maintenance in every phase of sports activity. This should include spinal health examinations on a regular basis.
