Since 1971 Mrs. Bailey has displayed her doll house irt the Learning Resource Center for the children to look at. The doll house Mrs. Bailey owns was built in 1947 by her grandfather as a birthday present. The house is a replica of what a typical home looked like during those years with the furnishings very similar to the post World War II period. was upholstered by Mrs. Bailey and many of the furnishings are made from objects used everyday. Mrs. Bailey shared how she made some of the objects in the home. The towel bar in the bathroom is made of beads and Q-tip sticks, the dishes are acorn tops, the plates are buttons and the jello salads on the table are made of JuJu Bees, the slippers are made from eye glass pads, wall pictures are earrings, etc. Mrs. Bailey stated she is always looking for little things that she can use in the doll house, “If I see something and it will fit or work in the house I get it. Sometimes it’s things that would normally get thrown away," remarked Mrs. Bailey. She said it takes patience to work with such little items. When she does buy some objects for the home they are either purchased from a hobby store or ordered from a catalog. Just recently she received money for her birthday, which went to buy things for the doll house. What makes .Mrs. Bailey spend so much time and money on the house? “It’s the fun of seeing the children when they come in and see the doll house,’’ she remarked. “It’s a thrill to stand back and watch them, look and listen to what the children are saying.” She remarked that often the children will sit down in front of the doll house and try to figure out what some of the furnishings

are made of. Every two to three years, the doll house is brought back to the school for the children and each time the house is brought back there are changes made. This year Christmas tree lights were added for lighting in the small home. When the doll house is not at the school LRC room Mrs. Bailey has it covered up in her basement. Then when she takes it back to school it will take her one day to fasten down all the furniture. Each time the doll house is taken back the furniture is arranged differently for a different look. Since 1971 the interest at Milford Elementary School in doll houses has grown. Mrs. Bailey stated that over the years she has had children ask her if there are books on doll houses and how she made things for inside her own doll house.
