French classes attend French music concert
By BETH PRITCHARD The French two and three classes of Wawasee High School went to see a concert done in French on October 8, at the Century Center in South Bend. The concert was performed by a group of four guys, called Suroit. “Suroit”, when translated into the English language, means southwind. The group is from Montreal, Canada. The group sang many types of French songs. They sang “everything from folk songs to ballads to country and bluegrass. This was all sung in the French language. Mr. Stan Grabowicz, the French teacher at Wawasee, said the concert was “a well done portrayal of the French Canadian
Foreign Language Club plans to sponsor Valentine Dance
By SANDY KORTENBER During the October 3 meeting of the Foreign Language Club, the members decided on sponsoring a semi-formal Valentine Dance sometime in the middle of February. The dance is the club’s sole money making project. The students will vote for a queen and queen from the eight contestants, a boy and girl from each class. During the middle of the dance a queen and king are chosen. Another activity decided on at the meeting was the Halloween party. The club members will pick a theme. It will be either Spanish, Latin or French. The whole setting of the party will be centered around one of the themes. One example of this would be having Spanish food,.
Homeroom on Wednesdays
By CYNDI CLEVER For about the last 10 years Wawasee High School has had homeroom on Fridays. But now, since the 79-80 school year has started, it has been on Wednesdays. According to Mr. Kesler, there are a couple reasons why homeroom was changed to Wednesday. One is because a lot of teachers schedule their tests for Friday and the classes were shorter. The other reason is that we usually have pep sessions on Friday and that just takes more time out of the classes. Will Kennedy run for president? By TAMMIE GOODSPEED Will Ted Kennedy run for President of the United States in the 1980 election? This is a question being asked by many. According to the New York Times, his presidential decision will be a personal and family matter. Kennedy has been asked to run before and almost decided on it until his life was suddenly filled with tragedy. An incident which will undoubtedly affect his decision was in June of 1968. He lost the last of his three brothers. His father was still alive but not able to speak because of a stroke. At the age of 36 he became the head of the house, with no other men, which he was not ready for. To end all of their turmoil, he ended up in an overturned car, near midnight, in a pond off Chappaquiddick Island with a troubled marriage to worry with. Aside from all *of these problems that are staying betweep him and the candidacy, his mother has already stated her wishes. The New York Times stated that she does not want her son to run, and if she says don’t, he won’t. Kennedy stated that he wouldannounce his decision in a few weeks, but he said that it would make his supporters happy, reported the Fort Wayne Journal.
spirit expressed by the musical talent, style, and unique instrumentation. Indeed, French History in music form.” The students of the class had a different opinion on what they liked. Margie Gans, a second year French student, said she liked the concert and she also stated, “I thought the guitar player with the blue suit was very cute, and the percussionist danced great.” Cathleen Cole, a third year French student, said, ‘‘lt was good, very educational, and I liked the music, but didn’t understand some of it.” Even though most of the students did not understand what was being sung, they all agreed that the concert was very interesting and well worthwhile.
Spanish games, and Spanish costumes. The Foreign Language Club is also currently active in sponsoring a foster child. The foster child’s name is Adela Espejo. Adela and her family live in Bolivia, which is in South America. According to Brad Calobrace, most of the money which is raised goes to the paying of the bills and the buying of the food. He went on to say without this extra money the Espejos would probably not be able to survive. Foreign Language Club’s teacher sponsors are Miss Kehoe, Mrs. Rush, and Mr. Grabowicz, Spanish, Latin, and French teachers respectively. The officers of the club are Debby Smith, president and Sharon Kortenber. vice president.
About 43 per cent of the students asked said that they would like homeroom to be on Friday again. ‘‘lt makes the day seem shorter and most of the teachers are in good moods because it is Friday. Also, a lot of students have tests on Friday and that gives them a little extra time to study,” stated Jon Wiggs. Over half (51 per cent) of the students, including Chris Darr and Lance Clark, said that they like having homeroom on Wednesdays because it breaks up the week. But if it is going to be on Wednesdays, a lot of the students said they wish it would'go back to 38 minutes instead of the 28 minutes it is now. The other nine per cent of the students said that they don’t care what day it is on. Art Club sets Pumpkin Carve By SHAWN LOWERY The Wawasee High School Art Club has announced that their club’s annual Pumpkin Carve is October 23, at 7 p.m. at the high school. Mr. Jerry Johnson, Mrs. Joy Warner, and Mrs. Nancy Glon, the club sponsors, are planning a larger carve this year. Mrs. Glon, the art aid, explained, “This year’s membership is larger than in the past couple of years. At the present time there are twenty paid members who are/able to come because only members can attend.” The members of the club must bring their own pumpkins and tools for the carving. After all the pumpkins are done, refreshments will be served.

CHRIS CARBONE AU. SENIOR AT WHS. WORKS WITH R ADIO CONTROL EQUIPMENT
Radio-control is fast growing hobby
By PAUL SIEGFRIED One of the fastest growing hobbies amoung students and adults is the hobby of radiocontrol. There are radio-control boats, planes, cars, helicopters and even submarines. Vince Price, a Wawasee sophomore, works with RC (radio-controlled) boats. He explains how they work. “The transmitter sends out the signals. The number of channels ranges from two to 12. The number of channels means how many things the boat or plane can do. For example, a two channel transmitter can run the throttle and the rudder. In airplanes, a three channel could run the throttle, rudder, and elevator. The transmitter also has a butler for retractable landing gear. “The receiver is placed in the boat in a water tight compartment. The receiver receives the signal from the transmitter. The receiver is connected to the battery and the servos. All the radio equipment goes into the watertight compartment. The servos are the parts which move PRIDE By SANDY KORTENBER You may have participated in, or heard of some of the Wawasee High School Homecoming events. You probably thought it was a lot of fun. But who was really responsible for all this fun and enjoyment? It is a club called PRIDE. Most people who have ever heard of PRIDE have one question in common. What is PRIDE? PRIDE is a group of students chosen by their classes to represent them. According to Mr. Terry Iden, one of the PRIDE teacher sponsors, PRIDE’S main goal is to promote school spirit. PRIDE usually sponsors such events as the Class Olympics and the Victory Dance. Other activities include writing letters to honor roll students and organizing Swap Day.

SOIL JUDGING TEAM ADVANCES TO STATE COMPETITION
WHS soil judging team advances to state competition
By LYNN HATHAWAY The Wawasee Future Farmers of America’s soil judging team has advanced to state competition. the throttle and rudder. The servos have a dial which turns. Push rods are connected to the servos. As the servos turn they push the pushrods which move the throttle and rudder.” Most radio-controlled boats and planes come in kits. Prices for these run from beginners, under S2O, to expert, up to S6OO just for a steamengine powered radio-controlled yacht kit. This does not include any radiocontrol equipment or engine. The big steam powered boats use steam engines which costs $350. Chris Carboneau, a senior at Wawasee, is mainly interested in racing boats. One boat is a 24” tunnel hull which is a smaller scale of a pro racing boat. The engine is a .20 cu. in. water cooled motor. In a boat, the engine is water cooled. In an airplane the engine is air-cooled. On a calm day, the boat could go as fast as 40 m.p.h. The boat is made of mahogany and birch plywood and is covered with the epoxy paint. “For a person just starting out,” comments Carboneau, “I suggest line control airplanes. The kits give you experience building the model and you get experience in flying. The best kits are the ones made of wood. The foam and plastic ones break up too easy.” In Carboneau’s workshop were 15 airplanes, some which were broken, and some being repainted. Carboneau said that he has put a lot of money into his hobby. He said a gallon of special engine fuel cost him sll. Carboneau said that a person should not go out and buy a lot of expensive equipment and think that it is easy and go out and try it. They will crack up the plane or boat the first time. Carboneau advises learning from someone experienced first. Before you rush out and buy equipment, which for an average set could run up to S3OO, you must get FCC licenses. You must send to Government Printing Office or FCC Office and ask for form 505. When you get to that, you must fill out an application and send it back and wait for a license.
meet they are allowed to advance to the state meet in November. The soil judging team judges in three holes and one home site. They judge to find such things as slope, erosion, drainage, surface and subsurface texture, and land form. Judging at the home site is to see if the land is suitable for a home. When asked how he thought the team would do, Richard Owen had this to say, “It will be a challenge, I hope.”
New look for the WHS choirs and orchestras
By SUSAN FREEMAN The choirs and orchestras at Wawasee High School are going to have a new look this year. Two hundred new uniforms were ordered by the music department for the students. The boy’s uniforms will look like black tuxedos and will have velvet trim. The girl’s uniforms will consist of long black skirts and matching vests with velvet trim. According to Miss Ganette Smith, the Wawasee High School orchestra instructor, the unifor-
I Movie reviews/Animal House I
By STEVE PEACH Usually when a movie is second run, or second time through your area, the response is not as big as it was the first time. This is not true with this particular movie, Animal House. When I arrived at the cinema the line was long and everyone was anxious to get in, sit down and see John Belushi cause havoc and frustration throughout Faber College. Talking to people in the line, I found out that most had already seen the movie, but still wanted to see it as if it were there for the first time. Blutarsky (Belushi) was very funny throughout the flick, starting food fights in the cafeteria, holding the world famous toga parties, and just being his drunken slob self. Blutarsky was not alone in the
"Running on Empty"
By PATTIE GERRITY Jackson Browne’s newest album entitled “Running on Empty” deals with songs about empty goals and disillusion. According to Seventeen magazine, the April issue, it shows a working musician’s life on the road that falls far short of satisfaction. But Browne’s passion for musical expression adds the vitality to these
Choosing a name for pets
By CARLA EASTLUND Choosing a pet’s name may not always be as easy as it seems. There is often much thought put into choosing “just the right name.” After talking to a few WHS students and teachers, the names of some pets and the reasons for the names were given. KARLA KRUEGER, 'a junior at WHS, has three pets. She has a Schnauzer named Shotzie. This dog was named before she got it, but the name itself means sweetheart in German. She also has a cat named Midnight “because she’s black,” and a turtle named Herman, which was named by her aunt and then given to her. DEBBI CAREY, who also has a Schnauzer, named her dog Kizzy. When asked why she chose this name, she replied, “because when we got her the show “Roots” was on and the dog reminded me of Kizzy.” TRICIA MARTIN, who has a Dachshund, named her dog Tabu. When asked why she chose this name, she stated, “Because she’s black and she’s evil.” FHA initiation By TAMMIE GOODSPEED The Wawasee F.H.A. club held an initiation at Wawasee High School this past week. Initiation for new members was held on the 16th. For the informal initiation, a new member was to do whatever an older member had told her to do for that day. The formal installation was held Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The girls who were installed were: Jackie Kennelly, Teresa Swope, Michelle Brandenburg, Mandy Grimes, Lorie Richardson, Cathy Fifer, Sonia Long, Kim Snyder, Lesia Tyler and Patty Zimmerman. A fall district meeting will be held on November 7. The Wawasee Chapter will be giving a 2-4 minute speech on the mini convention which was held here at school. All of the local chapters will be there to discuss old and new ideas.

ms cost $17,000, which was raised through the music department’s annual candy sale. ITie last time the choirs got any tyjje of uniform was in 1968 when they got their green and gold choir robes, but the orchestra has never had any type of uniform. The. choirs and orchestras will be showing off their new uniforms on December 13, when they will present their Christmas program. According to Miss Smith, the uniforms “are going to promote a more professional appearance.”
Delta house Faber College scoundrels. Flouncier, the fat boy who was picked on and put down, became one of the heroes of the film by throwing marbles onto the street and causing the parade of ROTC soldiers to fall and make fools of themselves;. The highlight of the movie is, of course, the parace. Changing a beautiful new Lincoln Continental into a Eelta tank, the Deathmobile, literally destroyed all the homecoming floats and brought doom and destruction to the whole occasion. Animal House is rated R (Restricted) and it is easy to see why. From the girls in the dorm having a pillow fight, to the pledge and the Mayors daughter on the football field. Animal House proves to be fun for everyone and, by the response of the audience, the flick could run a third time.
songs. Some of :he pieces taken from the album are: The LoadOut, Nothing But Time, Rosie, The Road, and Stay. Some are written by Browne. Seventeen magazine also adds that Browne states that some were recorded onstage, backstage, on a tour bus and one even in the motel room, but they still convey feel; ng.
808 MORGAN, another dog owner, named his Golden Retriever Barney. Bob said he named the dog Barney, “because he looked like iny Uncle Barney ; he’s got real fat cheeks like my Uncle Barney.” MR. KEIFER, a science teacher at Wawasee, has two pets, a dog and a cat. His dog is named Willie Jr., and was named after his father “ ‘cause he looks exactly like his dad.” The name Fang was chosen for his cat “because she bit s a much.” JANET WALL also owns a cat and a dog. The names she chose were Ebony and Boots. Ebony was chosen, “because it’s all black”; and Boots was chosen, “because he has four white feet.” So, as one can see, pet names are chosen for many different reasons. Some people pick the names from the characteristics the animals have, the resemblance to relatives, or from their favorite television shows. How you spend your 2,500 extra hours By PAUL gJEGFRIED What happens after school every day? What do people do when they seep off the bus? According to the July, 1976 Reader’s D gest, on the average, students have about 2,500 hours of spare time per year. The author states that most of these hours are spent hard at work, but some people said they do nothing but sleep, eat, end watch television. In our school, the general consensus leaned toward jogging, working out, and playing different sports. THERESA MCCLAIN, Wawasee sophomore, says she enjoys listening to music, doing homework, shopping, and skiing. JIM PLUMMER, ano:her sophomore, likes to play ping pong. Freshman GREG DAY uses his time to work out with weights for diving and basketball and he enjoys hunting, too.
KENT LAWSON AND JAMIE WHITE WERE HONORED FOR THEIR NOMINATIONS FOR McDONALDS ALL AMERICAN BAND
Two WHS students honored by McDonalds
By CARLA EASTLUND Kent Lawson and Jamie White, seniors at Wawasee High School, were honored for their nominations for McDonald’s All American Band, last Thursday, Sept. 11 at McDonald’s in Warsaw. Each year McDonald’s selects two outstanding band members from each state to march in their band, which marches in many events, including Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The students are all nominated by their band directors. This year, Mr. David Blackwell, band director at WHS, nominated six people for the band, and out of those nominations, Kent and Jamie were honored. Mr. Blackwell said that he thought .they were
JERRY GANS DON ATES HIS SHARE TO F REDDY FINER
Freddie Finer comes to WHS
By LONNIE BLACK This year Mr. Zurcher, a history teacher at Wawasee High School, came up with away to keep the whole class and himself in a better attitude. It’s called Freddie Finer. It also encourages students to have self discipline. If the class by majority vote finds Mr. Zurcher angry in class, he must donate one dollar to Freddie Finer. Anyone caught sleeping during films, forgetting items for class, or talking during announcements must make a donation to Freddie. The money collected from Freddie Finer will go to the Junior class. So far over fourteen dollars has been collected. When asked what they think about Freddie Finer here is what some people said:

honored because of their state contest records (where they both received firsts), and for their outstanding character references. Kent and Jamie both received award plaques, and they and their families, along with Mr. Blackwell and his family were treated to a dinner at McDonalds. Mr. Blackwell stated “I think it’s a great thing to be honored by McDonalds, because it promotes outstanding achievement." He went on to say, "I think it’s a great thing they (McDonalds) did, and they really treated us nicely.” When Kent and Jamie were asked how they felt. Kent said "It was truly exciting”, while Jamie said, “I felt honored just to be nominated for it."
