Controlling the budget

By PATRICIA M. RATHBUN Extension Agent. Home Ec. You can’t control rising costs, the weather or the world economic situation. But you can control the family food budget. Most family food managers want to provide meals that are nutritious as well as .good to eat and still stay within the food budget. You have to plan. You have to determine just what your family needs in the. way of food. How much you should spend on food is dependent upon your family’s nutritional needs. If yow have a bunch of active, growing children plus a father who does heavymanual work, you’re going to need hearty food. If the family members are more sedentary, less energy is required, so lower calorie fowl is needed. A good diet depends on the food you select, not the amount of money you spend. To help you estimate how much you might reasonably spend, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has figured the cost of three basic food plans. Weekly food bills for a family of four with the low cost plan add up to S4B to $57.90 depending on the ages of the children. Comparable costs for the moderate-cost plan are S6O to

The USDA has found that these items account for 25 cents of every dollar spent in the grocery store. In order to reduce the food budget, it may be necessary to adjust our attitude about food We have long been accustomed to using food to fill our bellies rather than nourish our bodies. This is evident by the number of obese people in our society. To follow a good basic diet, use the Basic Four Food Groups as your guide. Include each day two servings of fruit and vegetables, four servings from the bread and cereal group and two servings from the milk group. Generally a serving is one piece, one slice, one-half cup or two ounces cooked. Shopping for nutrition is one way to cut food costs. Planning is your key to success in reducing food costs. Planning the weeks meals ahead of time lets you make the most of your food dollar. One of the best times to plan is the day the weekly food supplement appears in the paper. Scan the food ads and jot down the specials. Then plan your menus around the weekly food ads. Being a successful food

Firemen close gas leak at Syracuse Dave Scheidt reported a gas leak on Grandview Drive, Syracuse, after workmen broke a natural gas line while digging to install a TV tower on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 6:58 p.m. He alerted the Syracuse Fire Department and Northern Indiana Public Service Company. There was no fire and the firemen clamped the line to close off the leak.

Sheriff Dept. August report The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department answered 456 complaints during August and investigated 54 traffic accidents involving 77 cars, 14 persons injured and two deaths. Ten accident arrests were made. Estimated traffic damages were $69,100, and property damages totalled $53,625. Fifteen of the traffic accidents occurred at night. 32 during daylight and seven during dusk or dawn. Thirty-five arrests were made. The sheriff’s department also investigated 25 burglaries, 21 thefts, 5 batteries, 12 criminal mischiefs, one criminal recklessness, one child molesting, one drowning and one forgery. Value of property stolen totalled $27,218 and $18,202 worth of stolen property was recovered. Three hundred eighty-three papers were served The Kosciusko County Jail reported a total of 141 bookings with 81 bookings by the sheriff s department and 60 bookings by other police departments. Twenty-four juveniles, 17 boys and seven girls, were taken into custody.
