Lakeland teams record 32-26 jamboree victory

The Lakeland Corporation’s Junior High football teams played against the Pierceton, South Whitley and West Noble teams last Saturday in the first annual Wawasee Junior High Football Jamboree. The Lakeland teams managed a narrow 32-26 victory and provided a glimpse of good news for Wawasee’s football future. The Milford Trojans opened play against the Pierceton Cubs in the first period. Most of the play occurred in Pierceton territory of the field as Milford moved the ball. Ron Schwartz dashed into the end zone for an early touch down and Tony Blackburn ran for the two point conversion. The Trojans, led by coaches Ned Speicher and Tony Clouse, continued to move the ball but were unable to cross the goal line during the remainder of the period Syracuse’s Yellow Jackets opposed South Whitley during the second period of play and added two touch downs while holding South Whitley scoreless. Syracuse Coaches. Leroy Rapp and Dave Baumgartner were

the Syracuse defense which kept Pierceton at bay. Coach Elton Power’s North Webster’s Trojans came alive in the fifth period of play. Jeff Atwood continued to run well along with Curt Olhwine. Steve White sneaked across for a touchdown and Atwood ran for the extra two points. Quarterback White also displayed passing ability as Atwood was able to catch his tosses. The Trojan defense held South Whitley scoreless and the score was 32-30 at the end of the period. West Noble charged out in the last quarter and Johnson scored again for them to narrow the score 32-26. As they appeared ready to drive for the winning touchdown they fumbled and Larry Lehman recovered for Milford. The Trojans then controlled the ball in some fine runs and the clock ran out. The jamboree was directed by Wawasee’s head football coach Hal Traviolia and athletic director Carl Meditch. Over 400 fans attended and it is planned as an annual affair to assist the junior highs in preparing for their regular football seasons.

But the Phillies exhibit the same pitching weakness today that has cost them a trip to the World Series in the past. Those big. tall throwers serve up too many gopher balls. The staff as this is written has the worse ERA of any team in the National League. One can’t win a pennant with that kind of pitching. Danny Ozark is no doubt a good manager. He is the Walter Alston type. Some bigcity scribes' take that calm exterior for dullness. Not so. Ozark knows his baseball. But. in this writer’s opinion, he has stuck too long with players who haven’t delivered. There have been injuries this year but in the big games and the late-season showdowns, the big hard throwers can’t get that ball by all the good hitters. Where are the Phillies young hurlers? Why hasn’t Ozark made some drastic changes? In a recent series with arch-rival Pittsburgh, it was painful to see the Phillies blow one 8-run lead and. in general, get murdered.

Zebras top Warriors It was an improved Wawasee football team that took the field at Rochester last Friday night In spite of the improvements, the Warriors fell short of victory, losing to the Zebras 20-12. The young Warriors are beginning to come into their own and should be a team to watch in the future. Al Schlagenhauf, who emerged early in the season as a Warrior standout, gained 141 of the team s 168 yards in 15 carries. In the third quarter Schalgenhauf went 80 yards for a touchdown. Rochester was the first to score as the Zebras marched 45 yards downfield and scored on a twoyard drive by Barry Thompson. Thad Tinkey was back in the Warrior line up and made his presence known. He recovered a Rochester fumble on the 30 and six plays later quarterback Todd Hardy went in from the oneyard line on a sneak to tie the score at six all. Oscar Hernandez also recovered a Zebra fumble during the night. Freshman Ross Dahlstrom intercepted a pass and ran the ball out 20 yards before being stopped Schlagenhauf’s third quarter run put the Warriors in front 12-6. Rochester took the kick off and 11 plays later tied the game at 12 all as Buddy Howard went in from the seven. The extra point by Dave Baillieul was good and Rochester was in front by one. Later the Zebras bobbled a punt and the Warriors drove to the 27. On a fourth and three with only a short time remaining in the game. Hardy attempted to throw the ball to Schlagenhauf but threw it in the dirt. Rochester's final touchdown of the game had come in the fourth quarter as Bob Waltz made a sixyard run. The kick was good. The final score: Wawasee 12 — Rochester 20.
