Way’s Budget and Admissions Committee met to review budget requests for the 1979-1980 year. The answer is a definite yes. There are two agencies that serve only the Syracuse, Milford and North Webster area and

many agencies whose services are shared by the whole county. United Way Northern Communities Chairman Mary Geller, Northern Industry Chairman Dave Arnold. Milford Chairman Paul Reith and Jim Miller, North Webster chairman took a tour this week to see how United Way agencies serve the Northern Communities. Lakeland Youth Center The Lakfeland Youth Center provides character building activities for its more than 700 members who come from Syracuse. Milford and North Webster. Gymnastics, karate, drama, dance, special spirts programs, basketball, foot ball and wrestling are some activities offered. Area adults also benefit from an adult volleyball league and exercise classes. The budget allocation for this United Way agency will be $12,000 for 1980. Lakeland Day Care Center The purpose of this United Way Agency is to provide quality child care for children of the Syracuse, Milford and North Webster areas. Many United Way agencies serve on a county-wide basis. Home Health Care County residents receive quality home health care under the supervision of their own physician from this agency. Availability of this service allows many ailing patients to avoid longer hospital stays and ailing senior citizens to remain in their own home instead of in a nursing home. There have been 395 visits in the Syracuse, Milford and North Webster area by nurses from Home Health Care this year. Juvenile Task Force The Task Force is interested in helping solve the growing problems of the youth of Kosciusko County. Their first goal is to provide a temporary

Office on Wheels in county this week

Congressman Floyd Fithian’s Office on Wheels will visit communities in Kosciusko, Marshall and Wabash counties next week. Fithian announced that a member of his staff will be available in the mobile office to help individuals lacing problems with the federal bureaucracy. Citizens also will be able to convey their views to Fithian’s aide on matters facing Congress. “A congressman must stay in touch with the people he represents." Fithian said, "and the mobile office is one of the best means of doing that. This service gives all citizens equal access to their congressional office, regardless of where they live." Fithian noted that the 2nd District covers more than 5.000 square miles, including 113 cities and towns in 14 counties. "The Office on Wheels enables me to bring Washington a bit closer to Indiana," he said. Next week, the Office on Wheels will make these stops in Kosciusko County. Thursday. shelter of separation from home required by the child’s individual circumstances as determined by the court. The Task Force is currently in the process of obtaining a building for their use. The Anthony Wayne Council No. 157 Boy Scouts Os America Many area youths are active in Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs. There are 42 scouts in North Webster, 18 in Milford and 41 in Syracuse. Cardinal Center The Cardinal Industrial Workshop and Training Center serves the mentally and physically handicapped of Kosciusko County. Individuals attending are taught the basic skills and academics for every day living. There are 18 clients from the Milford, Syracuse and North Webster area presently enrolled at Cardinal. Combined Senior Citizens The Milford and Turkey Creek Citizens Clubs are both United Way agencies. There are 30 Milford senior citizen members and 48 Turkey Creek members. Aside from offering entertainment and fellowship, these groups are devoted to helping members adjust to the problems of age. Council On Aging And Aged This United Way agency's primary purpose is to coordinate programs to meet the needs, opportunities and problems of our county’s senior citizens. The center is located in the Calvary United Methodist Church, south of Syracuse. It is licensed to care for 40 children and is open from 5:30 a m. to 6 p m.. Monday through Friday. Fees are based on family income. The Day Care Center will receive SB,OOO from the United Way. A van is currently operating county wide as transportation for senior citizens. The van operates

Winona Lake. Fire Station. Tuesday. Sept. 14 — 9 to 9:25 a m.. Burket, post office; 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., Mentone, town hall; 4 to 4:30 p.m., Etna Green. Methodist Church; 4:40 to 5 p.m.. Atwood, post office. Alexandria man injured in crash on Backwater Road Jerry Daie Carson, 42, Alexandria, was injured in an accident on Backwater Road, three miles east of North Webster. on Saturday, at 6:05 p.m. He received cuts to the chin and lip and was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital. Carson was later arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicating beverages and public intoxication by Fred Martin, a state trooper. Carson swerved his 1970 truck to miss an eastbound vehicle and went off the right side of the road. The truck struck a utility pole and went to the other side of the road and struck a tree head-on. Estimated damage to Carson’s vehicle was SI,OOO.

Indiana Lakeland Girl Scout Council J Girl Scouts are active* in northern Kosciusko County. Milford has 35 members. North Webster has 78 members and Syracuse has 116 girls participating in the scout program. USO. Salvation Army Small appropriations make Travelers Aid and United Service Organization United W'ay agencies. These services, if needed, would certainly be available on a county-wide basis. Calls for emergency welfare totaled 31 from the northern area, last year by the Salvation Army although most of its caseload comes from the Warsaw-Winona Lake area American Red Cross The Water Safety. First Aid and Blood Programs of the Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross are all active in the Milford. Syracuse and North Webster area. Records show that of 2.291 individuals registered in Red Cross water safety and swimming programs. 1,094 came from the north community. First Aid courses are also held in the area and 440 people from the North Community participated in this service with 50 volunteers working as instructors. More than 50 residents have received help through the Fuel Crisis program administered by the Red Cross. The Blood Bank program, which provides a means of collecting blood from county residents to be held in credit until such time when other county residents need it, works for many north community people. The Blood Bank visits Milford every year and goes alternately to Syracuse and North Webster.

Silver Thimbles quilt The September 10 meeting of the Silver Thimble Club of Milford was held in the Apostlie Christian Church fellowship hall. Mrs. Glen Losee and Mrs. Ned Speicher were hostesses. Before the business meeting two childrens quilts were knotted for the October auction sale, Mrs. Arthur Haab, president opened the meeting. Mrs. Steven Beer and Mrs. Tom Speicher gave reports. “Happy Birthday" was sung for’ Mrs. Rich Stoller, Mrs. Walter Wuthrich and Mrs. Arthur Haab. Wedding anniversaries observed were those of Mrs. Rich Stoller, Mrs. Alvin Haab, Mrs. Jesse Beer, Mrs. Arthur Haab, Mrs. Steven Kaiser and Mrs. Glen Losee. The annual public auction sale will be held Saturday evening, Oct. 13, in the church hall. Mrs. Wesley Bell is a new member. For devotions the 23rd Psalm was repeated. “Take Time to be Holy” was sung in unison. Memorial Bibles were placed in the church for Mr. and Mrs. Charles Weisser, Mrs. Andrew Rapp, Mrs. Ernest Krauter and Mrs. Benjamin Knochel. Taco salad, sugar cookies and coffee were served to the 21 present.

The most letters or numbers allowed on a plate is six with one space. The least is three. Those who are renewing last year's plate have until October 31 to do so. After that date anyone can picked up those not taken. New plates can be ordered until December 31. Driver’s licenses can be renewed six months ahead and the person will still get full time from birth date. This is a help to people who head for warmer climates in the winter. There will be an extra state examiner at Syracuse on Wednesday, Sept. 19, for anyone needing to take a driver's test. Persons should call for an appointment.
