'Singing About Jesus' is 'a gift from Cod'
“It's a gift of God.” remarked Mr and Mrs. Walter (Gwendolyn) Williams, -r 1 Syracuse. The icouple has just recently published a book of sohgs entitled “Sind About Jesus!” They wentlin to sav, "We felt He did a lot for us and we should do something for Him.” The bt*>k includes 29 songs the couple has written within the last year The book came about after friends and other persons from the Syracuse Church ojf God. the church they attend, who thought the couple should put the songs in a book The decision was put off for several years before sending the music to be proofread at Nashville. When writing their songs, the W'illiams’ inspirations come at peculiar times. Mrs. Williams stated most of her lyrics came to her while she was working Her husband mentioned some of his lyrics or music has developed in the middle of the night or while at work According to the couple they have a lot of fun writing their music for the Lord. two of the songs in the book were published in 1972 and 1973 on sheet music by Bill and Gloria Gaither. Williams mentioned he tried to get the Gaithers to sing the songs for him. but they refused. Most of the music in the book is written in a fast tempo. Mrs, Williams stated. “It seems to be the style of words I write and it is what the people like.” Also most of the music is written in any other key of music other than the key of C. Mrs. Williams who plays the piano and organ prefers playing in flats or sharps During their years in evangelistic services, Williams directed the music while his wife played the piano or organ. Before moving to Syracuse, Williams was a minister in the Church of God denomination in California. The United Methodist Church in Leesburg has used one of his works, “Wonderful Love." on Palm Sunday, along with a number of other churches, when the two songs were published as sheet music. W'illiams stated they might put
33Ut another book someday, but because of their age it may not get finished. “We have a lot of fun writing them." remarked the couple 1 The b,K)k is only available by contacting Williams. Area minister begins telephone help service
Have you ever been discouraged, hurt or just need someone to talk to? Steve Kiplinger, r 3 Syracuse, is starting a service for people who need prayer or counseling, in his home. He feels this is a “major method God is using to w'in people to Christ ." The initiating thought came a few weeks ago when a lumberman called from Minnisota for the North Webster Lumber Co., and obvously dialed the wrong number. Kiplinger occasionally answers his phone with a verse from the Bible and on this day he did so. The man said "Praise the Lord you're right.” After realizing this was a stranger, Kiplinger and the lumberman carried on a real conversation. After ending the conversation Kiplinger felt "this is just exactly what I want to do." Kiplinger wants those who have problems emotionally or are discouraged, to call him and together have a prayer or possibly go further with personal counseling. Normally most Dial-A-Prayer services are a message put on a recorder for those who call in. His type of Dial-A-Prayer service will be more than a recorded message. His main objective is to point people who are in need or troubled emotionally to come to know the saving power of Christ. “He’s the answer to our personal problems in life." remarked Kiplinger. he has been the pastor at Broadway Christian Church, an interdenominational fellowship near Cromwell for 11 years. Earlier he and his wife, Mary, were at the Fountain City Church

Lewis Firestone qualified as Church of God Elder
There are qualifications in the scriptures for elders and deacons and they are hard qualifications to measure up to, but the congregation at the Syracuse Church of God feels that Lewis Firestone has the qualifications suitable for his position as church elder. Firestone has been elder for the past five years. As an elder of the church he is to look after the spiritual welfare of the church and to call on the sick. "We try to challenge the church in the work of evangelism and missionary work We set up programs to that effect,” stated Firestone. He feels his position as an elder is challenging. One way that it is challenging is the fact that those members of the church who have personal problems come to the elder for guidance and help. Being in a high position in a church should have some satisfaction and Firestone stated "that if there is satisfaction it is knowing that you are in the right position at the right time and you assume this within yourself at that time. This is what I have felt." Because he is the elder of the church. Firestone is chairman of the commission on evangelism and missions. Also his duties are to go to the state conference each year as a delegate. Firestone was elected by the congregation at a business meeting in June. There is also one other elder who is Oliver Hibschman. Syracuse. The Firestones have been members at the Syracuse church for the past 40 years. In that time he has been superintendent for Fall Evangelistic Series at Church of God next week The Church of God, North Webster, announces the Fall Evangelistic Series. September 2-7. Rev. Carl Reynolds. Springfield Ohio, will sene as evangelist. Rev. Reynolds serves widely in the Church of God as an evangelist in revivals and camp meetings. He is noted as a dynamic preacher who effectively communicates the word of truth. Pastors Brice Casey and Henry McCray extend a warm invitation to the public to attend these meetings. In addition to the 9:30 a m. service these evangelistic services will continue nightly at 7:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday. The Church of God is located on Main Street and one block north of the traffic light in North Webster.
