SUMMER

Stover Hire wins inboard championship

He started racing 10-foot outboard boats when he was nine years old. Now in his 40s. Stover Hire, Syracuse, is the North American Champion and National Champion in the 280 cubic inch inboard hydroplane class. Hire started racing after a friend sparked his interest. He raced the 10-foot outboard on Syracuse Lake. While racing in the outboard classes. Hire won four national championships. Switches In 1972 In 1972 Hire started racing in the 280 cubic inch inboard class, the most competitive class in inboard racing. The switch came

after he won the national championship in outboards for the fourth year and he wanted to try something different. Something bigger. The boat currently raced by Hire is seven years old and is made out of wood and fiberglass. The boat has been clocked at 120 miles per hour on a straight course. When he bought the boat in 1972 it cost $7,200. Today a similar boat would cost $16,000. Racing Season The boat racing season starts Memorial Day week end and ends in October in Saint Petersburg, Fla. Almost every week end there are races throughout the United States. At each race there are 11 classes of inboard boat races. Hire normally attends 13 races a year. He could attend a race every week end but the pay in boat racing would not cover the cost of gas and upkeep of the boat. There is a national high point competition which is based on the number of races a racer wins and competes in. For the past three years, Hire has placed second in the National Championship. This year when the races started at Dayton, Ohio, 46 boats competed for the title. When he defends his title next year he will not need to go through the qualification rounds for a position in the top 12 for the finals. Hire normally does not practice because of the speed limits on the area lakes. He does get some practice in before the races when they allow test runs. Hire has accredited his success in racing to a lot of years of driving, a good boat, engine and a good engine builder. With several championships under his hat. Hire has achieved the top honors. His next goal is to drive a seven-liter Grand Prix boat, which runs up to 180 miles per hour on the straight away. Every person participating in sports quits one time or another. Hire stated he would quit,

“When I feel like I can’t be competitive and my reflexes are slow or I get hurt.” All sports are dangerous, but some more than others. Boat racing could be considered one of the top in dangerous sports. Hire stated that a number of racers have been killed or seriously injured from flying out of the boat while it is traveling over 100 miles per hour. He noted a method has been developed to help prevent the driver from serious neck injuries if he should be flung from the boat. A parachute has been utilized by some of the racers to slow them down before hitting the water head first and to turn them around so the feet hit first. Hire also mentioned that a number of racers have been injured because the parachutes have failed or they have gotten caught on parts of the boat. Wife, Daughters Travel Too Hire normally does not attend these events alone. Traveling with him is his wife, Kay, and their daughters, Karen and Shanna. The next race for Hire will be this coming week end, August 25 and 26 at. Saint Timothy, Quebec, Canada. Many people have forgotten that the original cardinal virtues are prudence, courage, temperance and justice.

Cold Facts For Successful Freezing

The warm, lazy, hazy days of summer have a definite effect on the American palate—visions of meat, potatoes and heavy desserts give way to thoughts of crisp salads, fish, and garden-fresh fruits and vegetables. To take full advantage of summer’s bounties, it makes good sense to study the hard, “cold facts” on use of freezer space, say experts at Admiral, makers of upright and chest freezers. Good use of freezer space can help hedge against food cost inflation and capture seasonal foods at their best. How you decide what foods to store depends on your family’s tastes. But remember these tips if you want to get the most out of summer food values: • The key to successful freezing is packaging. If food is wrapped tightly and is fairly waterproof, storage time can be increased. If food is not wrapped well, it will get “freezer burn” from

loss of moisture. • If you plan to freeze fresh fruits and vegetables, keep in mind that nutritional losses can be minimized by freezing them within a few hours of gathering. •Use freezer space wisely. For example, an Admiral Zero Guard chest freezer offers large storage capacity in minimal floor space, and features sliding lift-out baskets that provide extra food storage flexibility and convenience. • Be a savvy shopper this summer. Keep an eye open for specials on foods that can be frozen. For example, if meats or fish are on sale, buy a large quantity and freeze in meal-size portions. • Look at your freezer space with a long-range plan. Cash in on fresh fruit summertime values — and freeze items that can be enjoyed next winter. Paying attention to the “cold facts” of summer can mean big dividends from your freezer in the long run.
