New classes to begin at Goshen Hospital Aug. 21

On August 21, 22, and 23, a series of cardiac classes will be held at Goshen Hospital. These classes are open to anyone who has had heart disease or who is interested in learning more about heart disease and its prevention. The series will be at 7 p.m. in the Community Health Information

Heart and blood vessel ailments are the causes of over half of all deaths in the United States'Approximately one out of two deaths of individuals between' the ages of 45 and 65 is caused by a disorder of the cardiovascular system. Men between the ages of 30 and 60 suffer heart attacks four times as often as women in the same age group. After age 60, the rate of frequency of heart attacks is about equal for men and women. Progress in recent years in both diagnosing and treating heart disease has prevented early death for many individuals. Heart disease does not always need to be a crippling problem. Many persons now return to work following a heart attack. The first class on Tuesday, Aug. 21 will include a discussion on the heart and its function. Other topics to be considered are disease processes and risk factors along with what you can do about them. * Angina and complications of heart disease are the planned topics for Wednesday, Aug. 22. The proper use of medication and knowledge of its side effects to help you report to your doctor will be discussed. The emotional effects of a heart attack will be dealt with from both the individual’s point of view and the spouse’s and family’s. The final class on Thursday, Aug. 23 will be a presentation by B. Fierce, dietician. Following a heart attack or to prevent artery disease, the individual may be instructed to follow a low salt, low cholesterol, or low fat diet. Mrs. Fierce will include discussion on the basic food groups to be avoided and approved foods. For further information concerning the classes, please contact the Education Department, Goshen General Hospital.
