FISHIN'TIPS from . . Tom Mann
It occurs to me that a heap of fishermen are passing up a heap of good fishing by going only for the glamor sport fish, and not paying more attention to the lesser lights. I’m speaking about bluegills, catfish, and carp.' Now you take thht sporty' little bluegill, or brim as it is called in my country. There just is no finer flavored fish around. My favorite way to catch a batch is to bury a longshank No. 8 Aberdeen hook in the seat of a cricket, and let it sink naturally. Boy, do they go for it! And catching catfish is as easy as finding a deep hole, preferably where water is moving, and baiting a No. 1/0 Eagle Claw h(x>k with a hunk of fresh chicken liver. The bloodier the- better.
The Siamese archer fish feeds by knocking insects off twigs several feet above the surface of the water with a drop of water spit from its mouth.
Just keep casting this out until you see your line go tight, then just set the hook and hang on. Now while carp aren’t regarded as the best flavored fish by most people, no one can dispute their ability to put up a stiff battle. Make a doughball out of a hunk of fresh brtad, flavor it with vanilla, mold a kidney-lx-ari-’ size chunk of this around a No. 2 Eagle Claw hook, add a sinker, and let it soak on the bottom. A burlv carp will find it. BRER TOM S CLOSING TIP: Watch bad wclither signs, like black clouds building on the horizon. I lead for shore when a wind starts to build. If caught miles from shore, throw out a bow anchor. and ride if out. Don’t dare a stonn, it can do you in.

BASEBALL ' ' * By Pete Fritchie WASHINGTON. D. C. - The feeling here is, that unless the American League team can play smarter baseball and get better managing, the league will never win an All-Star game. Surely the American Leaguers kicked away this year's game with stupid play. In the 7th, for example, with no one out and two on. Bob Lemon let hitters swing away. A bunt would have almost assured one more run to pad the lead. So the hitters swung away and no one came home--with first and second occupied and no outs! Jim Rice, in the Bth with no outs, threw away an almost sure run when he got himself tagged out. trying to stretch an error-double into a three-base hit. There was no point in that-one insurance rurt was what was needed, and chances were excellent he could have come on aroundsince no one was out. Then, in the ninth, to give the opposition four walks and the ball game, with pitching jitters--that needs no comment. Throwing away almostsure runs in the 7th and Bth
