2. GET your blood pressure checked once a year if you’re over 35 and if you have high blood pressure take your medicine. “There may be no symtoms." says Christine Haas, who is assistant director of nursing at New York Hospital, "but you « have to remember to follow the treatment.’’ 3. DON’T RUN for that train or bus. Take the next one. Short spurts of energy add stress to heart muscles and you shoura not give those muscles any extra work to do. They are busy enough keeping that heart in shape. 4. START a family exercise program—that is regular walking, running, swimming. 5. AVOID irregular strenous exercise. As Mrs. Haas says, “Instead of the five sets of tennis on Saturday, try doubles a couple times a week.” This may take a family or group exercise session where you can encourage your husband to be easy on himself. 6. TAKE a vacation. And* make sure the routine is a total change from his work schedule. 7. CUT DOWN high cholesterol foods like eggs, red meat, whole milk products. The whole family should embark on this diet. 8. WATCH your weight. A part of diet “prudence” is to stick with a “fatcontrolled” diet, which is often the same as a low cholesterol diet. You’ll feel better if you're not carrying too much weight. 9. AVOID unnecessary tension, says the American Heart Assn. Though some doctors dispute exactly what this means, it can't hurt to cool it. 10. GET A regular check-up if you’re over 35—and listen to the doctor's findings.
