“For years I've been fascinated by beautiful china and glassware,” stated June .Laudeman, collector of antique nand-painted china plates and pitchers. Mrs. Laudeman resides at 156 North Shore Drive in Syracuse with her husband, Robert, a retired Wabash County grain dealer. “I never dreamed my plates and pitchers would become so valuable when I was collecting them,” said Mrs. Laudeman who started her collection as a first grader in Milford Elementary School when a neighbor gave her two “Godey Girl" plates. Louis Antoine Godey founded the first American women’s magazine in 1830, arid these “Godey Girl” plates were available through the magazine. Mrs. Laudeman also has another “Godey Girl” plate given to her by her former Milford Latin teacher, Lillian Kanter, who is now retired and living in Goshen. . A native, of Milford, Mrs. Laudeman taught in Milford schools for 10 years before moving with her husband to Wabash County where she .continued to teach for the next 25 years. Retired now, she continues to substitute teach in Lakeland, Fairfield and West Noble school corporations. “Substitute teaching keeps me young at heart. That’s what I always want to be,’ quipped Mrs. Laudeman.

Mrs. Laudeman has over 100 pieces in her collection. ‘‘Every pitcher and plate has an interesting background. My Mexican Tallavera plate and my Blue Deft plates from Holland are really treasured.” she pointed out. Her most valuable piece is a tall pitcher painted by N. McCauliffe and manufactured by J. P. L. France. A title and number on the back or bottom cf a china piece is an indicator of its’value. China and glassware collectors’ books can be purchased in paperback form at most bookstores and list pieces by title and numbers. By looking up the title and number, a person can find the value of the piece. The number usually indicates that the piece is one of a limited series. Hand-painted pieces with the artist s signature are more valuable than those without. Many of Mrs. Laudeman’s pieces have been signed by the artists such as her two Bavarian plates painted by C. Daudin and T. Braun. These plates were given
to her by the late Mae Sparklin and Estella Shaffer of Milford. The local collector obtained her pieces as gifts from friends, relativesand former students; by inheriting them as family heirlooms: and oh her many travels. Her sisters. Mrs. Dale Sparklin of Syracuse and Mrs. David Clem of Goshen, gave her fine English Bone China and Haviland China plates made in Limoges, France. The Limoges factory was built in 1842 by David Haviland, an American. Four generations of the Haviland family have operated the factory. Other hand-painted Bavarian and R. S. Prussia plates were given to

her by her -former Milford teachers and later colleagues, Trella Caris, Bessie Burris and Martha Groves. f A world traveler, Mrs. Laudeman and her husband have visited all the states, except Alaska, all the provinces of Canada and 40 foreign countries, and she has bought many of her plates and pitchers on her trips. She purchased several plates of fine Staffordshire English Bone China in London, England. Her MeitoiJapanese) China plate is artistically painted in traditional Japanese soft pastel flowers and birds. Her most unusual plate was
purchased in a shop on the summit of the Cordovada Mountains near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “W’hile we were driving with our guide through dense tropical forest on a winding road, we kept seeing beautiful blue butterflies flitting about. When we stopped at the shop, I bought a butterfly plate - many blue butterflies mounted under glass with a metal backing. The butterflies still remain the vivid blue color even though the plate was purchased in 1960,” recalled Mrs. Laudeman. Mrs. Laudeman’s other hobbies include gardening, snow skiing and her two-year-old grandson, Brian. "I walk a lot and read books and articles that require effort, thought and concentration. I don’t want to be a mental loafer. I always try to improve my mind," she said. She has also written several educational articles for publication and is listed as an author in "Writers and Writings of Kosciusko County.” She is an active member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse.
