Manchester tops Wawasee swimmers

The Manchester swimmers topped the Wawasee swim team 312-250 over the week end. It was Wawasee’s final match of the summer season. Practice will resume again-in mid-September for the winter swim season. Wawasee swimmers placing first in the meet are as follows : Medley relays — Girls’ 11-12, Mischelle Berkey, Jenny Banks, Lesla Gadsin and Stephanie Eldridge; 13-14, Cathy Cobbum, Carla Clouse, Jennifer Darr and Laura Bonner Breaststroke — Boys’ eight and under, Mike Banks; girls’ eight and under, Jennifer BaumgartFOOTBALL TIME All 10. 11 and 12th grade boys who want to - participate in football for this coming season should report to the Wawasee high school gym at 10 a.m. August 6. * One of the most asked questions in fishing clinics is: “How does a fisherman know which color lure to use when there are dozens to choose from? Does it really make that much difference to a fish?” Well, I know it’s confusing to a beginner but let me assure you that a selection of colors is important. You see, a fish’s eye is made like ours, of rods and cones, and contains a substance called rhodopsin which color-blind people lack. So, fish can see not only color but tests show they can distinguish shades of colors. No one is smart enough to know which color the fish are going to hit. Many things enter into it such as how much light there is where the fish are, water clarity, sun angles, etc. So, I begin with basic patterns like natural scales, yellow's, shad, coachdog, chrome, and black. I keep changing and let the fish tell me which one they want. When the water gets real dingy, or turbid, I think sound instead of color and use noisy lures that rattle, or those that

Syracuse tops Plymouth for Culver tourney crown

Members of the Syracuse Little League travel team participated in a tourney at Culver last week end and came home with the championship trophy. The young Yellow Jackets defeated Culver 10-9 in their first game as they rallied and came from behind. The Syracuse boys fell behind 8-0 in the second inning. In the second game they defeated Nappanee 6-5 after being behind 5-0 in the third inning. And, in the championship game the Yellow Jackets defeated Plymouth 5-4, again coming from behind. The ’Jackets were down 3-0 in the third inning. It was the first defeat for the young Plymouth team in 20 outings.

J 979 state water ski championships at Camelot

The 1979 Indiana State Water Ski Championships will be held July 28 and 29 at Camelot Lake between Milford and Syracuse. The state tournament is for InJerilyn Britz to compete in Barth Classic Jerilyn Britz, well on her way to becoming the woman professional golfer of the year, has confirmed that she will be competing in the Barth LPGA Classic in Plymouth on August 17, 18andl9. Britz shot an opening round of 64 in the LPGA Championship at Kings Island recently. She is a former high school and college teacher and did not join the tour until she was past 30. Other prominent names who have joined the list of players coming to Plymouth Country Club in August are Kathy Whitworth, Penny Pulz, Debbie Austin, Marlene Floyd and Marlene Hagge. Judy Rankin, JoAnne Career, Laura Baugh. Pat Bradley (1978 winner!, Sandra Post and Jan Stephenson will also be there. Tournament officials expect a field of 80 professionals to play this year.

All age groups will be competing and there will also be divisions for the novice or begining tournament skier. Skiing will begin at 7 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Each day will start with slalom events, then go into trick events, and conclude with the jumping events. The tournament is being sponsored by the Indiana State Ski Club. LWBA to have fall meeting

Lakeland Women’s Bowling Association will meet Wednesday, Aug. 1, 7:30 p.m. at Wawasee Bowl, Syracuse, for its annual fall meeting. President Barb Miller stated that all members are urged to attend this important meeting. New Women’s International Bowling Congress rule changes will be given.
