the biggest production she was ever in until “Bye Bye Birdie.” This current production was her first experience with professional or semi-professional people. According to Mrs. Sanders, there is no need to keep Shelly’s interest up as some parents would need to do. “She lives for the next play," commented her mother.
Mother Involved Mrs. Sanders gets extra involved by making costumes. She commented that a person would need to enjoy doing the work. Often times she remembers being called to do other costumes besides her daughter s and enjoyed doing it. Mrs. Sanders has always wanted to do the wholecostuming for a show and received the chance with the “Wizard of Oz, along with being asked for help in the costuming of “Bye Bye Birdie" by Jim Stover. She remarked that it really keeps the family on the move. Sometimes Mrs. Sandera wonders why she’s doing a job, commenting about how crazy she has to be but she gets the job done. She stated “It’s*really fun, it's something you really like or you don’t ." A question raised by this reporter to the young actress was how she could spend her vacation rehearsing? Her reply was she’d “rather rehearse than do anything. I don’t mind it at all!" Another question raised was how she could stay in character? The young actress replied that it’s hard sometimes if there are other things on her mind but not if she likes the part and she is really doing her best and staying in character.
She is finding out that acting isn’t all fun and games. “It’s very hard work and a lot of discipline is put into it.’’ remarked Shelly. “It’s deadly serious business and it isn’t a Sunday School picnic. " Asked about working with the cast in the production she said, “Everybody out there is neat, nice, super and everything.” Later on in her life she hopes she
