Conkling Hill became Oakwood Park

Bill Conkling and his wife squatted on “Conkling Hill” long before it became Oakwood Park. When P. M. Henkle visited the lakefor a fishing-trip in 1844, the Conklings were there. The older couple were talkers, he would spin sailor’s yarns about the War of 1812, posing as a relative of Senator Roscoe Conkling, and she claimed to be a sister of President James Buchanan. There was only one bed in the Conkling cabin and Mr. Henkle. on his ‘ fishing trip spent the evening on the floor. In the morning he performed his ablutions in the lake. He reported that so many fish were caught one morning that the pleasure became pain. A lot of time was also spent watching the

contest, Debbie Bause. has enjoyed getting to know the other queen candidates. “It’s been fun,” bubbled Miss Bause. When asked to become Miss North Webster, Miss Bause said. "I felt proud. I was flattered.” She accepted the offer because she "thought it would be a good experience. It sounded like fun.” Miss North Webster is planning a bake sale and other money making projects for the contest. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bause, Jr , r 1 Warsaw, Miss Bause is a senior at Wawasee High School where her

enormous number of geese, ducks and brant that filled the nearby marshes. The old name of the point of land between the outlet of the lake and Conkling Bay was “Duck Point.” During their fishing trip one day a buck deer plunged into the lake to escape two large hounds pursuing him and started to swim across the lake, but seeing the men in the boat he returned to the shore and was pulled down by the dogs. There is no record of what became of the Conklings. Conkling Hill was acquired as a summer home for the Evangelical Church and was plotted as the village of Oakwood Park in 1894.

favorite' subjects are art and business. She is a member of the W’awasee High School Ski Club and Art Club. She also enjoys tennis, sewing, and gardening. Her plans following graduation are undecided, but she is interested in the fields of cosmetology, business and modeling. Her job at the North Webster Dairy Queen, her sponsor in the contest, and a large vegetable garden are keeping her very busy this summer. July 21 and competed in the parasol contest. “I knew it would be a lot of work, but I couldn’t turn them (Milford Area Development Council) down because I knew it was for a good cause,” replied Miss Speicher when asked how she felt when asked to become “Miss Milford." She said the community support has been great. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Speicher, she is a senior at Wawasee High School where she is a member of the executive council and yearbook staff. Miss Speicher is a member of the Apostolic Christian Church in Milford and sings in the church choir. Her hobbies, are reading, bicycling, and swimming. She is employed this summer as a secretary for the Speicher Insurance Agency.
