Michael Harris returns to Syracuse after serving as missionary to Mexico
“Laboring as a missionary in the service of God and his fellowman,” Michael Harris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Harris, Syracuse, stated this is what he had been doing during his one and one half years in Mexico. Harris was principally stationed in the Monterrey area in the Mexico-Monterrey Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He left in October 1977 for the missonary call with the Morman Church and returned to the United States in June 1979. Harris stated he was called by God to become a missonary to teach the restoration of Jesus Christ to those who wanted to hear the message. While he was there Harris traveled from home to home telling of Jesus Christ and was told by a native of Mexico, “Now when you come back to Mexico you won’t be a tourist.” x He never traveled alone, since Christ s apostles went in twos, so did those in the mission. During the time which was spent in Mexico he stayed in various cities in a private room they rented or with a member family of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were not paid for their work and had to pay for all expenses themselves. View Os Mexico Harris stated Mexico is a strange combination of old and new. Buggies can still be seen traveling down the street and little grocery stores, which could not survive in the United States, are found on each corner. • Street venders are seen with people carrying ob-

jects to sell along the street and beggers looking for a handout from a tourist or passerby. Harris also noticed a lot of kids playing futball (simular to our football but really is like soccer) in the street. Also, in the animal area, chickens are like domestic pets, running in and out of the homes and playing with the children. The housing goes from one extreme to another. There are lots of people living in the same house, whether they’re poor or wealthy. Insidfe the homes you won’t find carpeting, just tile. The homes are made of brick or boards covered with tar. A big industry in that area Harris observed is the manufacturing of eyeglasses along with the textile mills and of course tourism. A further comment on Mexico by Harris was that he had a lot of experience with people and had a chance to get to know the culture and why they believe in the Catholic Church, which is the dominate religion. Harris filled out an application in which top officials looked over. After filling out the application the local authority interviewed the applicants to give them an opportunity to hear what they had to offer. The applicants also talked to another church official. The decision as to where the applicant will go is decided by the prophet of the church. Morman Church The Church of Latter-day Saints (Morman Church) is based on the revelations that Joseph Smith said were brought to him in the 1820 s by heavenly messengers. After his death in 1844, the followers broke into factions, the largest being the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. This group was led west by Brigham Young and they founded Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1847. Presently the church headquarters in Utah directs more than 6,500 congregations having more than three million members around the world. The hierarchy of the church is made of men known as general authorities. Among the authorities the policy-making body is called the First Presidency. This is made up of a president and two or more counselors. It has the final say in all spiritual and worldly matters. z . An advisory body, the council of the Twelve Apostles, helps the First Presidency direct the church activities. The First Presidency is dissolved when the church president dies and the Council of the Twelve Apostles selects a new president. Traditionally the senior apostle in the council is chosen and he then chooses his counselors. Other general authorities include the church patriarch, a spiritual advisor; a three member Presiding Bishopric, which administers temporal affairs; and the First Quorum of Seventy who are in charge of missionary work. The women may not become general authorities. The basic geographical units of the church are called stakes. A stake presidency, made of a president and two counselors, and a stake high council govern the units. Individual congregations inside a stake are called wards. Missions, which oversee members where there are no stakes, are headed by a president and may include one or more congregations knowh as branches. Beliefs Mormons believe Jesus Christ established one church on earth, that it was taken away on his death and not restored until the revelations to Smith. It is also believed that Jesus came to America after his

Resurrection visiting its people, who had immigrated to the continent in ancient times. Among the revelations were the directions to gold plates Smith said he found on Hill Cumorah, near Palmyra, N.Y. Smith taught that the plates, left by a prophet some time after Jesus, contained records of the people Jesus visited in America and the true work of God. The “Book of Mormon,” written by Smith, states what members believe are his translation of the hieroglyphics on the plates. The plates later> were returned to Moroni, the heavenly messenger who led Smith to them. He also wrote the “Book of Doctrine and Covenants” and the “Pearl of Great Price.” These books and the Bible are the key documents of the church. Revelation, although, is considered to continue today through members of the First Presidency. Male members over the age of 11, who are faithful, are members of the priesthood and may attain positions of leadership in the all-lay clergy. Younger members are taken through a series of ranks from deaeon to teacher to priest before becoming elders some time after their 18th birthday. Later they may become high priests or seventies. A high priest may become a bishop or one of two bishop counselors who lead local congregations. Harris has been a member for five years at the Warsaw Church of Latter-day Saints. He commented “I genuinely believe the church is God’s true church on earth.” He also stated he would be willing to make a presentation of his trip to any group.
