Morrison Island first called Eagle Island after bald eagles
Morrison’s Island is near the south end of the lake, about a hundred yards from the shore line. High ground on the island faces the northwest with a view of the full length of the main lake and of Johnson’s Kettle. When the first white settlers arrived the island was heavily wooded and was called “Eagle Island" because some majestic bald eagles nested there annually. At the end of the Civil War, a soldier who had served with an Ohio regiment, William T. Morrison and his family came to Syracuse. He applied for the position of teacher in the small frame schoolhouse that stood near the corner of Washington and Harrison Streets. He was elected by ballot at a school meeting to be the master for the year’s term of four months. The following summer he moved out to Nine Mile Lake, as it was called and became a squatter on the land and built a cabin. He and his family lived there 30 years and received a title to the land. The house that was later built was destroyed by fire. With the insurance money, they bought a melodeon and a new shotgun and the family went to live in a barn.

The best known of the many children was Marion who was one of the most productive of the lake's fishing guides for years. As the popularity of the lake rose, so did the demand for lake front property. Mr. Morrison acquired a large sum of money after he sold off his land.
