Soil erosion: Become involved
B> STEVE BOEDER This is the first in a series of articles to acquaint people with what soil erosion is. its damages, methods to control, and how people can become involved. While these art ides will not cover all the varied aspects of soil erosion, we hope that they will make all take notice of the problem. Since the pioneer days when American land was first being cleared and cropped, the scars of erosion have been evident. There was always more land to exploit. Consequently, pioneers continued their trek across the country, opening up new land to grow crops and to graze cattle. The first American to be concerned about erosion was probably Jared Eliot. He was a minister and doctor from Killingsworth. Conn., in the early 1700 s. As he rode horseback through New England calling on his parishoners and the sick, he noticed water running from the wooded hillsides was clear; but water running from a bare hillside was muddy. He experimented to prove that everyt ime muddy water ran from a field, the field became less productive. Nicholas Sorsby said in 1860, “The very sight of decay all around excites in the mind of the young man. disgust, despair, a disposition to abandon the old place, once so dear to him. and the family, now so much abused, and seek a newer and better place, richer land, among strangers." While we are most aware of the erosion of the United States, countries throughout the world have experienced similar histories. The United States is young compared to European countries, for example, who have long realized the hazards in using land beyond its capability. The question arises, then; How long will Americans be content to witness the loss of billions of tons of soil wash and blow from our lands before invoking a serious national effort tostem this loss? The thirties gave us the “Dust Bowl.” Millions of acres of land, left open by man’s activity, were struck by long, enduring winds. The sun was dimmed even in Washington D.C. by the suspended soil, which eventually settled far out in the Atlantic Ocean.

Soil, as a natural resource, is not ’renewable over the short term Depending on how soil is defined, it takes from 30-1.000 years to form one inch of surface oil from parent material by natural processes. The soil loss, alone, justifies a high national priority to trolling soil erosion. But add the damages from soil losses to water quality, to crops themselves. and to water habitat for numerous animal species, the need is even more dramatized. In an article, which I have recently come across, the author

describes an on going trend in the Plains States to remove windbreaks, that were planted after the Dust Bowl era. to help conserve the soil This shows a short term logic on the part of those landowners. For the added cropland they bring into production, they have destroyed what has taken decades to get, and are setting the stage for a potential "Dust Bowl Era II.” The next article will discuss, specifically, the processes of soil erosion.
