Health summary released by Lakeland School Corp.

z The Lakeland Community School Corporation released the health summary for the 1978-79 school year. In accordance to a ruling by the board of health this year each school was required to update the immunization and health records of every student in the school as complete as possible. In screening of vision there were 212 students tested, 85 referred and 23 on the Watch list. The weights and measures of students from kindergarten to fifth grade were taken for approximately 1,450 students in the spring and fall. Tuberculin testing was taken for 25 new school students, 38 substitute and new teachers and 314 of the school personnel. Scoliosis screening on the junior high level showed 742 screened, 22 referred. 30 on the watch list and one refusal. The sell application dental flouride program for grades two, five and junior high showed 635 participants. The program was sponsored bv the sorority Psi lota Xi. Students treated in first aid totaled 8,614. There were 154 referred and 98 received care. There were 175 consultations with

Vice president to be elected in September

The election of a vice president for the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce will be held in September as discussed by the board of directors during its meeting on Wednesday; July 11. The nominating committee will seek a candidate who will be willing to serve as president the following year. Other program plans for the September general membership meeting were discussed. j The director discussed ways the organization could be more supportive and assist in involving morfc people in the Flotilla. Terri Caskey accepted the position of chairman Tor the community beautification committee. Phil Hoy, a board member and Mrs. Jack Alfrey will assist her. the nurse by faculty, 97 with the parents, 28 with a doctor and 360 with students. The nurse made 12 home visits. Many parents were contacted by phone at home and work. Health class at Wawasee High School involved discussions on veneral. disease, teenage pregnancy and an explanation of free health service available. The home economics class was given a nursery arts demonstration with a question and answer session. At the elementary grade level an explanation of the job of the schtxjl nurse was given and talks on personal hygiene. A menstrual hygiene film was shown to fifth grade level girls and mothers and fifth grade boys and fathers. Circulation of materials included an immunization letter to parents to update hellh records; kindergarten round-up literature; permission forms and explanation of various health screening programs to parents and health information, list of available help through county and state organizations. The Health Career club has eight members, three volunteers an ’ films and literature on health and related films.

Property and estimated damages totaled $154,085. Ten arrests were made. During June, the sheriff’s department answered 467 complaints, driving department vehicles 29,019 miles. Bookings at the Kosciusko County Jail totalled 118 including 12 juvenile boys, six' juvenile girls, 87 adult men, and 13 adult women. The sheriff's department investigated 23 burglaries, 29 thefts, eight vandalisms, two batteries, one indecent exposure, one child molesting, one forgery, and three motor vehicle thefts. Value of stolen property came to $51,890 and $39,855 worth of stolen property was recovered.
