Week end of lake events — 34th Mermaid Festival underway Flotilla parade set for Sunday
The coming week end promises to be a busy one for residents of this area with parades scheduled both Saturday and Sunday. The famous Mermaid Festival parade at North Webster will move out at 4 p.m. on Saturday. June 30 and the Flotilla Parade is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday. July 1. The Mermaid Festival is currently underway with events to be concluded on Saturday with the 34th annual “Queen of Lakes Beauty Pageant” finals set to begin in the school gym a 18:30 p. m. And, the 4th of July Flotilla events will begin with a dance from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. in the American Legion Hall and continue through the holiday.
Events continue tonight (Wednesday* at North Webster with reduced prices on the midway between 1 and 4 p.m. A strawberry festival featuring sundaes, shortcake and homemade pie will be held at the United Methodist Church between 4 and 9 p.m. The Cutie Parade will line up at 6 p.m. at the Camelot Square parking lot and will move out at 7 p.m. The basketball finals will be held on the school courts at 7 p.m and clue three for the royal treasure hunt will be given at 7 p.m. The annual Cutie King and Queen contest will be held in the school gym at 8 p.m. It is open to youngsters between the ages of four and six. Thursday A pony pull will be held on Thursday with the weigh-in taking place at the fairgrounds between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m The pull will begin at 6 p.m. and is sponsored by the 4-County Pony Pulling Association. Anyone in Kosciusko County may enter 48 inch and under ponies. The youth league and girls' softball competition will continue at 6p.m. A greased pole contest will be held at the merchant’s building at 7 pm. and the fourth clue for the royal treasure hunt will be given at 7 p.m. The talent contest will be held at Camelot Hall at 7 p.m Friday A chicken barbecue and ice cream social will be held on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. by the North Webster Church of the Brethren. Youth league and girls’ softball finals will be held at 6 p.m. Clue five of the treasure hunt will be given at 7 p.m. and a frisby tournament will be held on the Camelot lawn at 7 p.m. At 8 p.m. a frisby throw will lx 1 held with 25 free frisbees. nouncement of the sixth royal treasure hunt due at 10 a m. Also slated for 10 am. is the free through contest on the school courts It will be sponsored by the International Palace of Sports. At 12 noon the Tournament of Knights will be held on the school courts. The midway will open at 12 noon and bracelet day will be held from 12 until 4 p.m. The band contest will begin at 1 p.m north of the fairgrounds. At 2 p.m. another clue will be given and a ski show will be presented The show may be seen from the west shore of Lake Webster and will be an All Star Ski Show presented by members of the five Kosciusko County Ski Clubs. The parade is set to move out at 4 p.m. with awards and trophies totaling nearly SB,OOO for the best bands, floats, ears, .walking units, novelty units, etc. Jack Underwood of Fort Wayne will be master of ceremonies. Awards will be presented at the reviewing stand one half hour after the parade. The North Webster Ski Club will present a ski show at 7 p.m., the eighth clue will be given for the treasure hunt and motorcycle races will begin on the Trojan track south of town. The 34th annual queen competition finals will be held in the school at 8;30 p.m. with 1978 Queen Ann Porter presiding and crowning the new 1979 "Queen of Lakes.’’ Syracuse man cited following ' two-car crash Thomas R. Young, 21, r 5 Syracuse, was cited by Sheriff’s Selective Enforcement Ptl. Richard F. Method, for passing within 100 feet of an intersection. Young was cited after his 1973 Chevrolet hit a 1968 Chevrolet operated by Kelly J. Marquart, 18, New Paris. The accident was at the intersection of US 6 and CR 19at6:30a.m. Thursday. June 21. Damage was estimated at $1,500.
o SEN. LUGAR TO RUN AT SYRACUSE — United States Senator Richard G. Lugar will run Jhe 3,3 mile track in the Mail-Journal-sponsored Road Race in Syracuse on Tuesday, July 3. according to WHS athletic director Carl Meditch, who is spearheading the race. Meditch received a telephone call from the senator's Washington administrative assistant Paul Grefk on Monday stating Lugar's intentions of coming to Syracuse for the event. Meditch became acquainted with Lugar when the latter was mayor of Indianapolis and Meditch was head basketbail coach at Indianapolis Technical High School, and the Monday call was in response to a personal invitation by .Meditch, Senator Lugar is a long-time physical fitness enthusiast, and w ill be entered in the men’s over--40 catagory. He will be asked to hand out trophies to winners follow ing the race. Augsburger named to NRA committee ♦ Senator John B. Augsburger of Milford has been named to the Natural Resources Advisory committee by Senator Martin K. (Chip* Edwards, president pro tern of the Indiana Senate.

Flotilla ball on Saturday The Flotilla ball will begin events at Syracuse and Lake Wawasee. It will be held on Saturday, June3o. from 9:30p.m. until 1:30a.m. Sunday Events on Sunday will begin with the Boat-in Worship at 8:30 a.m. at Oakwood Park The theme of the Flotilla parade is “Memories: Yesterday's, Todays, Tomorrow’s.” Set to form at Wawasee Prep at 1 p.m. there will be six divisions — Antique and classic boat with decorations not expected although a sign with the make and year is suggested; junior; commercial; industrial; residential; and institutional. Jack DeHaven of Fort Wayne and Lake Wawasee will be the parade marshal. Trophies and cash awards will be given in all divisions. First prize is a trophy and $l5O, second prize is a trophy and $75. and third, prize is a trophy and $25. The best overall entry will receive the commodore’s trophy, the perpetual traveling trophy, plus SSOO. Tuesday The Flotilla Road Race with 3.3 and 7.9 mile courses will get underway at 6 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. a water ski showwill be presented at the fish hatchery. It will feature skiers from five county ski clubs. Following the ski show, at dusk, fireworks will be featured at the fish hatchery. Wednesday A Mini ski show will be presented at the Syracuse Park at 8 p.m. on Wedneday with fireworks following at dusk. Arts, crafts and food will be featured during the week end. Gonzales turned over to Texas deputy sheriff Pedro Munoz Gonzales, Jr., 36, Dallas, Texas, who was arrested on May 27 in Milford by Milford Marshal David Hobbs at a baseball game, was taken into custody by G. K. Briles, a Dallas County, Texas deputy sheriff. Gonzales is being extradited to Texas on a murder charge filed on May 17, in the justice of the peace Judge Pat McDowell’s court in Dallas. He is alleged to have killed a 14-year-old Dallas youth, Ray Smith, on a Dallas street while the boy was talking to his wife. Post office announces July 4 mail schedule The post office will operate on the usual holiday mail schedule in observance of Independence Day on Wednesday, July 4, Postmaster H. C. Colwell of Milford said today. There will be no regular rural or post office box deliveries. Normal lobby window service will also be closed. Normal mail service will resume Thursday, July 5.
