At Milford Park on Waubee Lake various happenings occur as people gather to enjoy some of their favorite pastimes, whether it be soaking in some sun as Beth Klotz and Sylvia Truex are doing in upper left photo, or going for a dip. Vacationers stay close to home
CHICAGO - Midwestern vacationers apparently are going to closer to home this summer because of concern over the gasoline supply outlook, a recent AAA-Chicago Motor Club survey shows. A survey of members, conducted by the touring department at the Club's main office in Chicago, indicates more vacationers now are planning trips of less than 500 miles than they w ere a month ago And the principal reason for planning shorter trips has shifted from the price of gasoline to its availability. In May. 41 per cent of vacationers were planning trips of 2.000 miles or more. In June, that figure has dropped to 34 per cent Only 12 per cent were planning trips of 500 miles or less in May; today the figure is up to 16 per cent. Drops also were recorded for vacationers planning trips from 1.000 to 2.000 miles. However, travelers planning trips of from 500 to 1.000 miles increased from six per cent in May to 16 per cent in June Western states still appear to be the most popular destination, but the number of vacationers headed in that direction has dropped from 45 per cent in May to 29 per cent in June. Meanwhile. Midwestern destinations have jumped from 12 per cent in May t 024 percent in June Both the South and East now are attracting about 23 per cent of the vacat ion planners Os vacationers planning trips closer to home. 20 per cent expressed concern over higher gas prices and 51 per cent over fuel availability Last month. 25 per cent were concerned over prices and 44 per cent over supplies Fewer vacationers were planning trips in recreational vehicles because of both-price and supply Sixty four per cent say they will travel in standard sized cars. 26 per cent in com pacts and eight per cent in recreational vehicles. The AAA-Chicago Motor Club is not discouraging summer auto vacation travel, but is advising its members to keep abreast of the gasoline supply-price picture, plan accordingly and then make a final check with the Club before leaving. Some other basic summer travel tips offered by the AAAChicago Motor Club are the following: — Try to travel during daylight hours as much as possible. More service stations are maintaining daylight hours than night hours. — Try to travel along major routes as much as possible. Current surveys indicate that service station operating hours are likely to be- longer along major routes such as the Interstates than in metropolitan areas. Keep your eye on the gas tank and if you've got some distance to go. get in the habit of beginning to look for a service station when your tank reaches the half full mark If you let the gas gauge go much lower you may be taking a chance, particularly on Sundays or if you have a considerable distance left to travel lake It Along! Baking soda is a dandy deodorizer. Place an opened box in ice coolers or keep travel 'friges' odor free. It absorbs strong food odors, even those fishy ones after you've scaled the family's latest catch. You can even sprinkle soda in tennis shoes or hiking boots if they call for de-scenting.

— Don't get caught up in "panic buying.' Don't let unsubstantiated rumors scare you into "topping off" your tank \\ hen the gauge is well above the half-full mark. Panic buying only leads to long lines at the service station and faster consumption of. available supplies — Observe the 55 mile per hour speed limit, makesure your tires are properly inflated, and keep your car properly tuned By

doing this you'll be a "Gas Watcher" — and you'll be able to make five gallons of gas do the w ork of six.
