FRIENDLY PLACE — A fun way to spend time with friends is at the neighborhood pool. These children seem to be enjoying themselves in the cool waters of the Wawasee High School pool which is being used for this summer’s swim program.

Water level to be lowered

The waterlevel of the Flatbelly impoundment located at the TriCounty Fish and Wildlife Area will be lowered this summer. The reasons for the drawdown are to stimulate marsh vegetation, improve the fishing, and improve launching facilities.. The drawdown will expose the mud bottoms of the shallow marsh areas surrounding such lakes as Spear, Allen, and Barrel & *2. Cattails, smart weeds, and wild millets will grow rapidly when the mud flats are exposed to the sun and air. This fall the Flatbelly dam will be closed to flood the new growth of wetland plants so that migrating waterfowl will have abundant food. The Flatbelly dam will remain

afternoon shift from 1-5 p.m. The first of two summer swim sessions is closed to further participants with 420 kids in this phase of the program. Those registered for the second summer swim session already total 435. Said figure does not include those who may continue through the first session into the second. The reason that the first session is closed with a lower number of students is due to the life-saving course not being offered second session. This will allow six more swim classes to be in operation, making room for 60 or more students in the second session swim. Swimmers of all ages and abilities, there may still be room for you in the second session.

closed through the water. Next spring the flooded vegetation will serve as perfect spawning areas for fish, especially northern pike. This drawdown technique was used in 1974 and 1975. The results were very good for both waterfowl and fish. It is good for fish because insects thrive in the areas where good stands of wetland vegetation exist. The insects are an excellent source of fish food and help stimulate rapid fish growth. After three years of flooding, the stands of wetland plants have gotten thin and this year’s drawdown will revive them. Launching facilities at Allen Lake, Hammond Lake, and Barrel & > 2 Lake will be improved this summer.
