Success and numbers characterize the family of Rev. and Airs. Theo Beer

By MIKE HENNEN Success stories abound across the country with the glittering facts and the extraordinary personalities that go with them So in recognition of Father’s Day. we thought you’d like to know of a local success story that has been developing over the past half century and is still going strong With 50 years in the ministry. 54 years of marriage and the same number of family descendents that includes seven children, 34 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, the family of Rev. and Mrs. Theo Beer, r 2 Milford, is a story that shows “honesty and hard work, with some help from the Lord " are the keys to successful living. These are some pretty impressive figures in this day and age when divorce is on the rise, where honesty is a shattered virtue and the disintegration of the American family may just be this nation's number one problem. But for the Beer’s, their life together, which began October 25. 1925, has been mainly con cerned with “raisin’ me a family and workin' on the farm,’’ as the familiar John Denver tune goes. An additional responsibility came to Rev. Beer in 192)) when he was ordained into the ministry. He has served at the

Apostolic Christian Church in Milford since then. Surprising to some. Rev. Beer’s ministry has been a free-will offering with support of his family coming from the farming effort. For the last 21 years Rev. Beer has been both an elder and minister at the church. He states he is now in a state of semi retirement from the ministry, retiring from the elder position last year and only preaching now when needl'd. As a young minister. Rev Beer was a retail milkman in Milford for 15 years from 1924-39 In '39he sold the retail end of the dairy business and went wholesale after that From 1946-67 he drove a school bus for the area schools. This occured as a result of the disbanding of the little country school located one-half mile from the Beer farm As Rev Beer noted. “In order to get the children to school, which was moved to where the Milford Junior High School is now. I decided to drive the bus to make sure they got there.’’ The junior high school was formerly known as the Van Buren Township school. For a 17-year time period, the Beers' raised spearmint on their farm and according to Rev Beer, “it was very profitable*’' Having

their own distillery on the farm made the process of production quite simple But after the Beer children had grown up and began to start lives of their own, the Beers went back to regular farming where they now raise corn, beans and wheat. The Beer farm is now run under the direction of Lewis Speicher, husband of daughter Miriam, who has fanned for the last 20 years. Beginning with Marguerite in 1929 and continuing with Phil. Miriam. Mary, Becky. Alan and finally Bernie, of whom Mrs Beer related. “I’ll never forget the thrill of having a son born on Christmas morning. " the Benfamily began to grow. Reliable Philosophy The Beer children well illustrate that the philosophy handed down to them by their parents has been a reliable one, not only in raising their individual families but jn their vocations as w ell. Concerning his children. Rev. Beer stated, “All have contributed honestly to their vocation.” And Mrs. Beer echoed her husbands sentiments saying. “I never have to worry if they’re working, but I worry if they’re working too hard.” Marguerite, the eldest of the Beer children, is married to Robert J. Hoerr who was recentlyelected to the Kosciusko Community Hospital board and is supervisor of the pattern department at the Dalton Foundry in Warsaw She has been the secretary at the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District office since it began and she will become the first female member of the Lakeland School Board on July 1. The Hoerrs’ have five children, four sons and a daughter. Daughter Becky is married to Richard Pelath and they presently live in Michigan City. They have three sons. Scott, Mark and Tony Dr. Robert Hoerr, Jr., is single and will become chief resident at the Indianapolis Veterans Hospital on June 16. Dr. Frederick Hoerr is a research veterinarian at Purdue University. He and his wife Martha have one son. August The remaining Hoerr sons have been at Purdue University. Douglas graduates from this institution with a degree in architectural landscaping and will be employed at Hoerr Landscaping, Peoria, 111. Jeffrey is a sophomore this coming fall majoring in engineering. If anyone is responsible for continuing the family line, Phil and Mildred Beer have to be given a lot of credit as they have nine children Phil owns Beer
