There’s Baseball, Tennis and — Walking?
What “sport” requires no equipment, no court, has no teams, no rules, no winners, no losers? What “sport” can just about everyone participate in, from 6 to 96? What “sport” can be enjoyed as easily in the city as in the country? And what “sport” are more than 44 million Americans discovering every day of the week? The answer is WALKING. As C. Conrad Carson, Executive Director of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness explains, “Because

walking is a ‘painless exercise,’ and because nearly everyone can do it, there is a tendency to discount its value. That is unfortunate, because few activities have so much potential for improving our psychological and physiological well-being.” The Footwear Council has endorsed walking for fitness as its ipgjor informational campaign in 1979. The Council has prepared a booklet which contains important information on walking for both fun and fit-
ness. It tells you how much to walk, how fast, how often and how soon. The Council advises people to walk when they would ordinarily ride — get off the bus a stop ahead, climb the stairs to the office, take a stroll to the store rather than hopping into the car. And walk daily, or at least every second day. View walking as you would any other exercise regimen — and adhere to your walking schedule as rigorously as you would stick to a diet.

WHS wrestling coach Terry Frank resigns
Terry Frank, the man who started the Wawasee High School wrestling program back in 1969 and has turned it into one of the most successful Warrior sports, has turned in his letter of resignation to the Lakeland School Corporation. The resignation applies only to his coaching responsibilities and not to his teaching capacity in mathematics and driver educational WHS. Is Frank getting out of wrestling permanently? “Heavens, no.’’ replied the wrestling mentor. "I’ll still be busy with the elementary wrestling program at the Lakeland Youth Center, being coordinator for the wrestling tournaments we will host at WHS next year and active in the adult booster club for wrestling ” As for the reasons for his stepping down from active coaching duties Frank stated, “It was just a personal decision. Coaching for 13 years and 10 of them as wrestling coach, it was just one of those decisions you make from time to time.” Due to the success of the wrestling program at WHS,

Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Smith, Syracuse, was honored along with other all-state recipients at the annual banquet held at the Holiday Inn in Lafayette last Saturday. June 9. This was the highlight of Smith’s golf career and topped off other accomplishments he has achieved since competing for WHS as a sophomore. As a sophomore Smith was a member of the winning WHS sectional team, as he received low medalist honors. This team also won the Northern Lakes Conference the same year. In his junior year. Smith was third low medalist as W’awasee finished third in the conference and again won the sectional. In this his senior year, Smith was the squad’s number one golfer, had second place finishes in the conference and the sectional meets. At the Homestead Invitational earlier this year, where most of the best teams in the state and most of the players who received all-state honors were in attendance. Smith again was low medalist. His second place in the sectional allowed Smith to compete in the state finals though his team did not fare as well. In his three years at Wawasee, Smith continued to lower his average. As a sophomore he averaged 80.6 for 18 holes, 78.1 as a junior and a low 77 average during his senior year. Members to the 1979 first all-state team include, in no ranked order, Gary Krueger of Valparaiso. Jim Gallagher of Marion. B. G. Winnings of Warren Central, Grant Mitchell of Lafayette Jefferson, Larry Goseweher of Frankfort and Dave Thomas of state champion Elkhart Central. Six were selected to the first team due to a tie in the voting. Normally only five are selected to both first and second all-state teams. Joining Smith on the second all-state team were Kirk Schooley of Columbus North, Tim Koressel of Tel City and Jeff Cook and Jim Reneau, both of Warren Central, who fell one shot short of Elkart Central for the title.
