Know the boating laws

With all of the summer tourists, vacationers and week-enders coming out to the Lakeland area it is good to’ be aware of good boating practices and water safety. Boating safety is a fulltime responsibility of everyone on the lake and all boaters should become familiar with Indiana boating laws. Here are some rules to remember. Don’t speed within 200 feet of the shoreline. Don’t operate boat in reckless manner. Don’t overload your boat or throw trash or garbage in lake. Don’t drive over 10 mph after sunset. Do observe the boating laws and check life preservers.

Flotilla at Tippy July 7

On Saturday, July 7, there will be a Flotilla on Lake Tippecanoe. Everyone is welcome to participate, including the many out-of-towners who come to the lake each summer. A panel of six judges from three age groups will be positioned on a raft near the entrance to Paton’s Marina. All participating watercraft must pass by the judges raft before 2 p.m.; when judging will take place, to leave their names and addresses so award certificates can be mailed. Five trophies will be awarded tone for each category* for first place. Five certificates of award will be given for second place runnerups. The five categories are: 1. The cutest (kiddy type motif)

The most elaborate Registration tickets are available at Patona Bay Gift Shop up until noon on the day of the flotilla. On each registration ticket will be a number to identify watercraft and one to identify the category. I.D. numbers should be placed on a big cardboard and attached td the watercraft so it is readily visible for the judges to see. In the bottom right hand corner of this cardboard, write the number of the category. All entrants should be at the starting place, which is Tippy Dance Hall, by at least 1 p.m. since

it takes time to get the parade of boats around the lake and back to the judges raft by 2 p.m. judging time. The parade starts at the Tippy Dance Hall to the entrance of Little Tippy (not into Little Tippy) and comes back up the other side of the lake to the judges raft. Anyone who has facilities for making or playing music on their boats should turn up the volume for all the homeowners around the lake to enjoy. There will be a four-piece band playing music from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Patona Bay. The flotilla is sponsored by the Lake Tippecanoe Property Owners Auxiliary. The committee members are Dorothy Westendorf, Coralee Phillippe and Norma Barton.
