1 YfeAR AGO, APRIL 26. 1978 Don Frew, eighth grader at Syracuse Junior High School, designed the best bookmark during National Library Week at the school. His design and slogan will now be submitted to a national company, where a SSO award will be given to the national winner. Mrs. Sherman (Mosciline) Deaton was crowned 1978 Syracuse Senior Citizens Queen this week. Mrs. R. C. Tytler has been installed as district director of the state convention of garden clubs. Seniors in the Wawasee High School bands will be honored Friday at the final band concert of the year. Billy G. Coburn will be the new Syracuse Lions Club president to be installed in July. Petition denied for relief in David Rock murder. 5 YEARS AGO, APRIL 24, 1974 A bike-a-thon is planned for Syracuse, according to Terry Griffith, on April 27 with monies raised going to Turkey Creek township cancer drive.
Homestead credit not automatic
State Representative Thames L. Mauzy (R Warsaw) is reminding homeowners that the new “homestead credit" enacted by the 1979 Indiana General Assembly is not automatic, and they must apply tor it before July 1, to receive it. Application is made in the same way mortgage deductions are claimed. Applicants must fill out a form and submit it to the county auditor. Forms will be mailed to all property owners with the reassessment notice by the assessor. If the notice has already been sent then the assessor will mail the form separately. If a homeowner does not receive the form it can be obtained at the county auditor's office.

The strike that has idled employees at the Weatherhead Company in Syracuse has been settled and over 300 workers returned to their jobs at midnight on Sunday. The program will be phased out after five years at the rate of two per cent each year, unless altered by the states property tax replacement fund board. The new law means that in 1980 the state will pay 30 per cent of a homeowner’s property tax instead of the usual 20 per cent. Persons buying a home on contract qualify if the contract calls for the buyer to pay the property taxes. Residential property taxes were projected to increase by 15 per cent as a result of the 1980 reassessment. the first reassessment in over 10 years The “homestead credit" is part of-the Republican tax package and is intended to offset the affects of the reassessment.

While gathering moss from Bartley Lake near Albion on Monday. Lloyd Felts found a huge set of antlers which appeared to have been submerged in water for years. An oil burner was blamed for a brooder house fire killing 300 young chicks at Lee Cory’s place Monday night. Items taken from Maxwelton Club A variety of items were taken the night of April 18 in a burglary at the Maxwelton Golf Club Inc., Syracuse. State Police Detective Sgt. Ray Carich said the intruders entered the building by breaking a glass door. Taken from the building were alcoholic beverages, some food and a small portable color television. Stephen Gall accepted at Manchester Stephen Gall has been accepted for enrollment at Manchester College, North Manchester, for the 1979 fall term. Manchester College, an independent liberal arts college, offers BS and BA degrees with majors in more than 26 areas. The college has increased its emphasis on career planning and has established a comprehensive Career Planning and Placement Office. Feed grain signup shows 8.7 million acres diverted
Producers during the first seven weeks of the 1979 wheat and feed grain program signup have indicated they plan to setaside or otherwise divert 8.744,985 acres of cropland Today’s report, issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, shows farmers intend to set-aside 4,827,797 acres under the wheat program and 2,248.273 acres under the feed grain program Feed grain producers will additionally divert 1,182,274 acres Os corn cropland and 276,410 acres of grain sorghum acreage. Earmarked for grazing cattle or , cutting for hay are 210.131 acres under the special wheat acreage grazing and hay program. Through April 5. 352,933 of the 2,387,929 eligible farms (14.8 per cent) had signed up for the Leesburg man escapes injury Thomas I. Welch, Jr.. 27, Leesburg, escaped injury when his auto slid sideways and rolled over into a ditch. The accident was three and one-half miles north of Warsaw on CR 400 N at 5:28p.m., Monday. April 16. Kosciusko County Patrolman Brant Nellans stated Welch was westbound on CR 400 N when the accident occurred. He estimated damage at SI,BOO to Welch’s 1978 car.

Sheriff gives report for month of March
C. Alan Rovenstine, Kosciusko County Sheriff, has announced the following activities for the month of March. The men drove a total of 30.986 miles. There were 27 off dutycomplaints and total of 440 complaints answered. They made 39 traffic arrests, and served 328 papers Accidents investigated byKosciusko Sheriff’s department were as follows: There was one fatality. A total of 93 cars involved in accidents, and 21 persons reported as injured. The estimated damages amounted to $5,180, and property damages at $106,940. for a total of $112,120. Arrests made by the officers totaled eight persons. Two deer were killed. Day light accidents totaled 22. while 35 occured at night, and the remaining four during dusk ordawn; totaling 61. Kosciusko County jail report shows the sheriff's department made 66 bookings while Indiana State Police booked one person The city departments booked a total of 64. for a total county-wide of 131. Os these booking 21 were juvenile boys, four were juvenile girls, 100 adult men. and six adult women.

Crimes investigated were eight burglaries. 18 thefts. 14 cases of vandalism and one case of battery. They investigated one case, of forgery and one natural death., Os the $22,327 reported stolen. $12,000 was recovered Wilbur Kneppers return from trip to San Antonio Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Knepper have returned from vacationing in San Antonio. Texas, where they visited their son. Beverly and family. They enjoyed several places of interest in the city including the “Alamo”. “River Walk” below the street level and a ride on the cable cars to the beautiful Chinese Sunken Gardens The high point of the trip for Mrs Knepper was a visit in the home of her former schoolmate and close friend whom she had not seen in 46 years. They had lost contact since attending school at Egeland, N D and again located each other four years ago.
