Bar association to present programs

Students from four area high schools will learn more about the work of lawyers and the operation of the courts next week when the Kosciusko County Bar Association observes Law Day on Tuesday, May 1. Steven C. Hagen and Phillip B. Rarick, two of the newest members of the Kosciusko County Bar Association, assisted by Liz Cutler, will serve as chairpersons for Law Day. May 1, 1979, will mark the 22nd annual nationwide observance of Law Day U.S.A. It was established by a Presidential proclamation in 1958. In keeping with the spirit. Mayor H. Dale Tucker, Warsaw has proclaimed this Tuesday, May 1, as Law Day. The theme selected in recognition of Law Day is “Our Changing Rights". One of the purposes of Law Day is to convey to youth a better understanding of the law and the American legal system. Toward that end, attorneys from the Kosciusko County Bar Association will address students and respond to questions of students in area high school government and social studies classes. encouraged to ask questions concerning how the local courts operate, what attorneys do in a typical work day and what preparation is necessary' to qualify to become an attorney. The Kosciusko County Bar Association hopes that by such discussion, students will obtain a better understanding of the law and of the work of attorneys and judges Police report given at Syracuse Syracuse Police Sgt. Lou Mediano has submitted the March report for his department to the Syracuse Town Board There were 216 calls answered by the department and 43 courtesy calls made. A total of 4.493 miles were driven. The police department assisted in three fire and ambulance calls during the month There were two gun permits issued and seven title checks made The police investigated four accidents, with property damage. Those four accidents involved “five cars and damages totaled $1,200. The department also assisted the county or state in six accidents. Losses in the amount of $1,831 in 12 thefts were investigated and the department recovered one car and $1,200 The losses in seven vandalism complaints totaled SSO. Other complaints received were of two missing persons and 15 miscellaneous complaints. Complaints concerning dogs totaled 26 and 21 dogs were impounded. Arrests made for traffic violations totaled 18, misdemeanor and feloney arrests were 15, two juvinile arrest or probation and five warnings were issued. Overtime for the regular officers totaled 78 hours and eight hours were spent at court The reserve officers worked 280 hours and in service training totaled 62 hours. The dispatcher s report for the month of March indicates there were a total of 2,412 calls hanCalls handled for Milford totaled 261. No calls were handled for the North Webster police department For the town of Syracuse there were 1,529 calls handled and 372 calls for the township. In fire department calls for the city there were 158 calls handled and 61 township calls. The street department calls handled were totaled at 31 and the dispatcher courtesies extended in calls totaled 494. Census Bureau taking applications The U.S. Census Bureau is now taking applications for Kosciusko County residents looking for temporary jobs now open. The work involves compiling lists of addresses in the county for use during the 1980 census. These lists will be used to produce mailing labels for the census questionnaires to be sent to each household on March 28, 1980. Census takers must then make personal visits to each non-responding household to collect the information required on the census form. Lost purse found by Webster police North Webster police department found a purse reported stolen by Lisa Knauss, 3001 W. Woodbridge, Muncie, hours after she reported it stolen to the Syracuse Police department, Sunday, April 15. Knauss reported her purse was taken when her auto was parked at either Wawasee Bowl, Syracuse, or the North Webster Dairy Queen. Contents of the purse was listed at SSO. Accident near Syracuse Saturday Indiana State Police investigated an accident at the intersection of CR 500 N and SR 13 near Syracuse, Saturday, April 14, at 1:57 p.m. Involved in the accident were Jerry W. Kinsey, 51, r 5 West Haven. Warsaw and Fredrick K. Baldauf, 60, 322 N. Beech, Osceola. Kinsey told police he had stopped for the stop sign at the intersection of the two roads and proceeded across the intersection when the accident occurred. He stated he did not see Baldauf’s auto in the northbound lane. man charged on two counts Charges of public intoxication and driving under the influence of intoxicating beverages were filed against Wilbur Haven Hicks, Jr., 50, r 3 Syracuse, by Kosciusko County police last Friday night. He was released on SSO bond.

Syracuse woman receives sentence

A young Syracuse woman. Robin Lee Harris, 18, 437 N. Huntington St., was sentenced to five years with the Indiana Department of Corrections last Friday in Kosciusko Circuit Court. Judge Gene B. Lee suspended the sentence, placing her on probation for two years. While on probation she is to maintain full-time employment, and is not to terminate her employment without permission of the probation office.
