Children from the ages of three months to two years are learning all about God’s love in a special class at the Milford Christian Church. Mrs. Robert (Patsy) Greenwood and Mrs. Don (Peggy) Bucher are the instructors. Mrs. Greenwood said. “It’s really a new theory of teaching. Most other churches just babysit. Our goal is to bring the little babies to Jesus.” Mrs. Greenwood discovered this concept of teaching at a minister’s wife retreat last year. She and Mrs. Bucher, then visited the South Lansing Church of Christ in Michigan where the class was being conducted. The next few months were spent in setting up the class program and making the toys and objects used. Many of the church’s adult women helped in the class preparation. Part of the class program itself, was purchased from Palma Lancaster Smiley of Texas, in the form of a book called, "Cradle Roll Curriculum. " This book was used mainly for ideas. The first class convened about a month ago. Already, some churches from the Fort Wayne area have expressed an interest in visiting the Milford church to view the class. God’s Creations Four lessons are taught to the children during the year. The first is “Thank you God for everything” and stresses what God has created on earth.

Infants are learning God’s love in Milford
Mrs. Greenwood said, “The three methods we use include method, association and participation.” The same lesson is taught over a three-month period. Pull toys, posters, dolls, stuffed animals and songs are used to help the children associate visually and by hearing. Finally, the children actually participate in the class through the senses of touch, sound, sight and play. Mrs. Greenwood is teaching the' first lesson, with Mrs. Bucher acting as her assistant. Then, the instructors will reverse their roles during the second lesson. In all. each woman will teach two lessons during the year. Mrs. Greenwood said, “We don’t teach Bible stories. We just teach what God has created." Teach Love . The three other lessons conducted over a year include: “Thank you God for my family,” “Thank you God for making me” and “Thank you God for baby Jesus.” “We try to teach them that mom and dad love them, that we love them and that Jesus loves them,” said Mrs. Greenwood. In the second lesson, the family concept of mother, father and baby will be stressed. Mrs. Bucher said, “We will teach the unity of the family, the concept of the family and how it came about.” Toys such as a mother duck and her ducklings, a mother chicken and her eggs, a mother rabbit‘and her bunnies and a

mother cat and her kittens will be used. Mrs Bucher added, “We keep going back to the Bible and how God created the family.” Again, in this lesson the children will see the mother animal and touch a baby. In all the lessons, each child will have his own toy to touch and feel while learning the concept. Farm animals will be used in the third lesson while the nativity scene will help the children learn about Jesus in the final lesson. Mrs. Bucher said, “It’s exciting. All the way along it’s a learning process.” Currently, about eight children are learning about God’s love. having good interaction.” Mrs. Bucher added. “The children are responding good.” “This is their first contact with the church. We’ve got to be a good contact,” said Mrs. Greenwood. As far as the future of the class is concerned, both women hope it will grow. Mrs. Bucher said, “As soon as we get it set up, we will involve more people. It can be a training ground for teachers." The class is now taught during the Sunday school hour each week. As it expands, the instructors hope it can be moved to either the church hour or possibly on Wednesday nights. Both Mrs. Greenwood and Mrs. Bucher also hope to eventually lengthen the class period from the present 35 minutes to an hour. As a pastor’s wife, Mrs. Greenwood is involved in a number of church activities. She leads the youth choir and teaches the 3D program — diet, discipline and discipleship. Mrs. Bucher is a nursery worker and works with the four and five-year-olds during the church hour. Both Mrs. Greenwood and Mrs. Bucher hope this class will be a success in the church. As Mrs. Greenwood stated, "This is organized play with a purpose.”
