» Up, up and away — kites fly high at Milford
Members of the Minora Christian Church Youth Choir held a kite party Sunday afternoon at the elementary school. A total of 21 youngsters attended. In the photos to the right Ronda Bailey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Bailey, Jr., of Milford, is shown as her kite begins to climb. In the second photo the kite is on its way down and in the third photo her expression shows her amazement over the fact that the kite did not stay in the air. In the fourth photo, Ronda’s brother Mike seems to be telling young Adam Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Wilson, Milford, to watch the kite as it climbs higher and higher. Following the kite fly the youngsters returned to the church for games, lunch and choir practice. The youngsters voted the kites
of Stacy Greenwood, Cindy Greenwood and Mike Bailey, all of Milford, were most unusual. The prizes for the highest and getting the kite up first went to Jeff Van Curen of Goshen and the prize for having the kite up the longest went to Scott Yates of Syracuse.
Simple home repairs
NAILS, SCREWS, AND BOLTS Nails, screws, and bolts each have special uses Keep them on hand for household repairs NAILS come in two shapes. Box nails have large heads. Use them tor rough work when appearance doesn't matter. (Fig 1) Finishing nails have only very small heads. You can drive them below the surface with a nail set or another nail, and cover them Use them where looks is important, as in putting up paneling or building shelves (Fig. 2) SCREWS are best where holding strength is important (Fig. 3) Use them to install towel bars, curtain rods, to repair drawers, or to mount hinges. Where screws work loose, you can refill the holes with matchsticks or wood putty and replace them. Use molly screws or toggle bolts on a plastered wall . where strength is needed to hold heavy pictures. mirrors, towel bars, etc. Molly screws have two parts (Fig 4) To install, first make a small hole in the plaster and drive the casing in even with the wall surface. Tighten screw to spread casing in the back Remove screw and put it through the item you are hanging, into casing, and tighten Toggle bolts. (Fig. 5) Drill a hole in the plaster large enough for the folded toggle to go through. Remove ' toggle. Put bolt through towel bar or whatever you are hanging. Replace toggle. Push toggle through the wall and tighten with a screwdriver Plastic anchor screws (Fig. 6) should be used where you want to attach something to a concrete wall. To install, first make a small hole in the wall and drive casing in even with the wall surface. Put screw through item and intp the casing, and tighten.

THE SUGAR COATED SECURITY BLANKET
Do you like sugar because you’ve got a “sweet tooth’’ or because during the early part of your life you were trained to use it? According to health authorities, many of our eating habits are not so much a preference as they are an addiction—mental as well as physical. This is especially true of eating sweets. If we look at it from a psychological basis, modern society often displays love and recognition to a child through sweets. The infant’s pacifier is often sweetened to keep him from crying; the child is often given candy as a reward; even the grown-up is shown affection by a box of candy or a cake. And so sweets often become a security food—subconsciously satisfying the desire for approval. Elderly people, when surveyed, indicate their favorite food as “beans.’’ This might seem to be a contradiction to the security food theory until one studies the era when these people were brought up. Those were the days of the depression when people could seldom afford the luxury of sweets. Every dollar was put into staple foods, and there wees nothing more staple than lowcost filling foods like bread, potatoes and beans. Among the three, beans was a treat. And thus it became the reward. Incidentally, that’s

why most older people can’t understand the tastes of our generation with its concentration on the high use of sugar. That’s also why most people tend to favor foods that taste just like “what mother used to make.” Is it going to be sweets or something much more nutritional in value? Doctors of chiropractic, who put particular emphasis on nutrition in their approach to health, recommend that it be a healthful food like a piece of fruit—not manufactured sweets. In fact, they warn against the overuse of refined sugar. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of how much sugar they really consume. They don’t think of the excessive amounts of sugar found in ordinary pastries, desserts, drinks, snack foods, and cereals. Sure, sugar frequently causes tooth decay. But the ill effects of excess sugar are far more dangerous in terms of what it does to the chemistry of the body, and the many health problems which may arise as a result. If you were born during the last 30 years, let’s face it, you’ve got an addiction, a habit, a psychological crutch with sweets. And it’s going to be harder to break than even the cigarette habit. But it’s well worth doing . . . for the sake of your health.
'little strokes “ alter personality
An often unsuspected cause of menial and physical incapacity is a series of "little strokes." A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is reduced or completely cut off This can be caused by a blood clot or by hemorrhage —- bleeding from an artery in the brain When the nerve cells of a part of the brain are deprived of their blood supply, the part of the body controlled by these nerve centers cannot function normally. Little strokes may start when a person is in the 30s or 40s. striking silently at night, or passing almost unnoticed as a sudden dizzy spell. a momentary blackout, or just a few moments of confusion The stroke itself is not severe enough to compel the patient to seek medical aid. but some permanent brain damage remains just the same, the American Medical Association reminds. ‘Made in Japan’ now a quality label
Remember when the “made in Japan” label used to be a joke? WeU, US firms seem to be changing their tune about those “made in Japan” items these days — especially when it comes to cars. Forties magazine reports that far from being a label that brings to mind images of inferior design, today US auto companies are playing up the “made in Japan” angle. Forbes says that American car companies, which have been manufacturing cars abroad for years, are now stressing the foreign origin on car part nameplates. The magazine says that Chrysler ads now feature im-ported-from-Japan, slogans and that one of Chrysler’s Japanesebuilt cars now even has the Japanese name “Sappora.” Forbes quotes one Dodge executive as saying “the fact that
