Parents not powerless

Parents are not powerless to shape the impact television has on their children. Parents can be effective if they adapt parenting skills to influence children’s viewing.

T.V. viewing can be compared to a good diet and selecting nutritious foods and limiting snacks. The first step is to examine your own viewing habits. Young children learn by example, so be selective in your own viewing.

Secondly, encourage teamwork in finding the good programs you want to watch. Check T.V. listings and plan family viewing together. Don’t promote a sense of “overall goodness” in T.V. by offering extra viewing time as a reward for good behavior. Young children don’t understand everything they see on T.V. and often mistake drama for reality. They need you to explain and interpret what’s happening on the screen. You'll be surprised that a comment or two from you will be remembered more than a half-hour of nonstop T.V.

One danger of T.V. viewing is that it’s passive activity. There’s no audience reaction as there is in a movie theater. Without laughter, applause, or criticism, everything on T.V. passes in silence. Children may interpret

this silence as unvoiced approval. Don’t allow this to happen. React out loud to what’s on the tube. Express your disapproval of something that offends your family’s values. Encourage your children to do the same. Then discuss these opinions among family members. On the positive side, T.V. can foster family communications on some topics that are difficult to talk about. Paunches are now glamorous for men

Hold on to your paunches men . .. fat is becoming fashionable. At least this is according to the Tern Company, one of Britain’s biggest shirt makers. 1 Tern said it surveyed a number of British women on their tastes in men and found that the beanpole look is definitely out this season. Tern said the survey showed that while just one in every five women polled found skinny men attractive, 34 per cent said they preferred men to have a suggestion of a tummy and 31 per cent said they actually preferred

human relationships are all common topics of T.V. drama. Parents can be effective in helping their children to be more selective in their T.V. viewing. It takes time, communication and the willingness to accept the responsibility. T.V. can have a positive or negative influence on children. Let yours be positive and make T V. viewing a family affair.

a slight paunch. Dick Howland, the firm’s managing director, said the results of his poll don’t mean it’s fashionable to be fat, but he added “a minor paunch which is still under control seems to appeal towomen.’’ When does a minor paunch get out of control? According to Howland, it’s when you can’t see your belt when you sit down; if you can’t lean forward without busting your shirt buttons; and if you can’t tie your shoelaces “without finding a middle region obstruction.”

‘Granny* busted for selling pot Teen-aged marijuana smokers in Simi Valley, Calif., have lost their pot connection. The Los Angeles Times reports that 68-year-old Lois Faulkner — known to her apartment house neighbors as “Granny” — has been arrested on charges of possession and sale of marijuana. The newspaper says that Faulkner, who was living on social security and welfare checks, supplemented her income by selling the weed to a “constant trek” of junior and senior high school students who came to her apartment. The Times says that the jig was up for Faulkner when she made two pot sales to undercover narcotics officers. Police claim they then found two pounds of Columbian weed and 75 small packages of hashish having a street value of about 5J.750 in Faulkner’s apartment. Described by police as “a sweet little old lady who walked with a cane,” Faulkner has been released on SI,OOO bail. You can’t tell what a man thinks by what he says. Most people feel that their neighbors have it pretty easy.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS with this column were taken by photographer Bob List on the day the sun was hidden from view by the moon. It was the last time this will happen this century and many had their heads covered and cameras ready for this unusual sight. We are therefore printing some of Bob’s photos here. —o—

THINGS ARE really shaping up for the EMS Bataar this week end. We’ll not attempt to go into detail in this column (see page 1 story) and won't attempt to mention everyone who is doing something because the response has been great. We did find out that one of the quilts to be auctioned on Saturday came from the joint efforts of the staff at the Milford Elementary School. All pitched in to do their share. The quilt is being displayed at Doll's Decorating. Marti Arnold has also donated a comforter and some dolls for the week end's events. They too are in Becky’s wir dow. Wish we had room to name everyone who has taken the time to make something to donate to the bazaar and ether events for the coming week end but it’s impossible. The response has been great. Everything (well almost everything) is ready for the coming events. Thursday will be used to set up the gym and people are urged to take bazaar and fleamarket items to the gym between 8 a m and 4 ,p m Thursday. Bake sale items should not be delivered until Friday or Saturday morning. A special note to the women of the community is they should go on a cooking strike this week end. Both American and Mexican food will be served in the cafeteria of the school on both Friday and Saturday. Saturday morning between 7 and 10 a m. the Kiwanis Club will be serving s. pancake and sausage breakfast in the cafeteria. And. on Sunday the firemen will have a carry-out chicken barbecue at the fire station. Wow! A whole week end without cooking! And, it can be a fun week end. The bazaar will be open until 8 p.m. on Friday to allow working people to stop and shop. Saturday night’s entertainment will be in the form of a square dance. It will be sponsored by the Lions Club and will be held in Barth’s van building. What a week end! The best part of it is all proceeds will be going to the EMS U help them help others.
