have petitioned the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for an upward adjustment in rates which would increase the cost of gas to NIPSCo by $6,795,405 annually. To offset the increase, NIPSCo filed a petition- with the Public Service Commission of Indiana on March 28 for new rates to recover the additional gas supply costs.

If NIPSCo petition is approved, the average NIPSCo residential customer using gas for homeheating will pay approximately $6.21 per year or about 52 cents a month more for gas service beginning in May. The average NIPSCo residential customer using natural gas for purposes other than homeheating will realize an increase of $1.44 a year or 12 cents a month more. The utility said that at current rates and pending petitions, the average NIPSCo customer using natural gas for heating and other puposes (160,800 cubic feet a year) will pay approximately $453 per year for this service rather than the $447 per year

Adjustments in gas rates to NIPSCo customers, usually upward and semetimes downward, will continue to occur as rates charged by the company’s pipeline suppliers change. All of these changes are regulated by FERC and must be approved by the Public Service Commission of Indiana. This is the fifth tracking adjustment filed by NIPSCo in 1979. Three have been increases and two have been decreases, with the net effect resulting in a S2B a year increase for the average NIPSCo customer using natural gas for homeheating and other purposes.
