During this three-month long class, the basic teachings of the church are covered as well as the history of the church. Several resource materials are used including: “Confirming My Faith,” by James D. Righter; “Discipleship;” “The Christian Way,” and “We Believe.” “The peple confirmed learn of Christ, God, the Holy Spirit, the church and areas of service and stewardship they can take on themselves," the pastor said. “They commit themselves to Christ publicly; confess their church membership before the congregation.” Rev. Steele added, “God confirms his promise of love and life to the persons. The congregation confirms the membership of persons as they enter the life of the church. ” Growing In Christ Rev. Steele has his own particular belief in what should be taught in a confirmation class. He said “I stress what the church is, what growing in Christ is, what the service of life in the church is.” He will spend a good half of the course on these topics.

The class, itself, is divided into several different areas. These areas include. God, Christ, Holy

Airs. Alock is chairman of music Mrs. Clayton (Iness) Mock, 74, Syracuse, is the chairman of music for the Syracuse Church of the Brethren. She has been the chairman for the past three years, along with being church organist for a number of years. As the person in charge of the church music, she attends all of the church board meetings and reports what the committee is doing, any problems or requests she has. She is responsible for working out who will play the organ and piano for Sunday mornings, acquire someone for the monthly song leader position and assign someone to have the special music on Sunday mornings. The music committee meets every three months at which time the committee members decide on members in the congregation to be the song leaders and who will have special music. There are three members on this committee along with the minister. Mrs. Mock’s position has a restricted term in which a person may serve. A person may only be acting as chairman for two-three-year terms and will be eligible again for the position a year later. She stated how she has always been needed to play the piano or organ wherever she has been. “Everyplace I go they need what I can do,” stated Mrs. Mock. “My hands have always wanted to be on the keyboard. I love it and I like playing the organ for the church.” Having played the piano and organ since she was six years old -and taking lessons from the

Area churches to celebrate Maundy Thursday, April 12

Area churches will be celebrating Maundy Thursday on April 12. Rev. F. Wayne Lawson, pastor of the Bethany Church of the Brethren, north of Milford on US 6, calls this day, “A day of preparation. This is the day Jesus and his disciples got ready to observe the passover feast.” Many dramatic events oc-

curred during this day, said Rev. Lawson. Probably the most eventful was the betrayal of Jesus by Judas in the garden of Gethsemane. The term, Maundy, itself means “feet washing.” Rev. Lawson said, “It goes back to a

She is in charge of the music committee which finds people to lead singing and give the special music every Sunday.

United States School of Music, she has found it to enrich her life and it is good therapy, physically and mentally. Mrs. Mock has been a member of the Church of the Brethren since she was 10 years old and has been a member of the Syracuse Church of the Brethren and the North Webster Chruch of the Brethren while her husband was pastor. Lawson feels this is; symbolic. “I think Jesus did this to demonstrate some of his mission. The disciples weren’t willing to serve each other.” Two other concepts of the foot washing, said the pastor, deal with service and humility. “It was a new cleansing experience. When you wash someone else’s feet, it’s an act of service and humility. This really was the essence of his ministry; the real

In Mark 14:22-24 (rs) it reads, “And as they were eating, he took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said, ‘Take; this is my body.’ And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.
