US students fail knowledge test
US students aged 17 and 18 are astonishingly ignorant of American history, geography and politics, a Gallup Poll reveals. And the National Municipal League, which commissioned the survey, blames the schools. Gallup periled 1,000 high school juniors and seniors and found that. • 82 per cent had no idea of what “detente” means. (Detente is the relaxation of tension between nations.) • 77 per cent had no idea of the distance between New York and San Francisco. (2,578 miles.) • 72 per cent had no idea of the population of the US. (220 million.) Civilian mail service to Iran resumes The U.S. Postal Service has announced the resumption of civilian mail service to Iran. Airmail service was suspended on January 9 and surface on February 6 because of the lack of reliable air and surface transportation to and from Iran. Mail that was in the U.S. Postal system at the time of the suspension was returned to sender. The Postal Service advises customers they can cross off the endorsement “Postal Service temporarily suspended” on returned mail for which no postage has been refunded and re-enter it into the mails at no extra cost. Average alcoholic now 25-30 The average age of alcoholics has plunged in the last 18 years to where the typical alcoholic is now just 25 to 30 years old, says a new study. In 1960 the average age of alcoholics was 55 to 60, according to the data released by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
