Under the kitchen sink
By PATRICIA M. BRAMAN Extension Agent If you look under the kitchen sink in most homes, you’ll find enough acids and poisons to kill. Although there are hundreds of brands of cleaning products on the market they are all basically the same. Most of these products are dangerous only when misused. The Federal' Hazardous Substances Act requires that dangerous products must have a label describing the hazards of using the product. One of the most common accidents involving home cleaning products is the mixture of toilet bowl cleaner and bleach. Used independently of each other they are fine. But when mixed, they give off a deadly chlorine gas. Never add bleach when using a bowl cleaner. Flush the stool and then add the bleach. Children are usually the victims in accidents involving

cleaning compounds. Each year thousands of children are poisoned by hazardous household substances. Accidental poisonings can be avoided if adults take proper precautions. Household cleaners should not be stored under the sink. They should be stored in a cabinet that is high enough off the floor that small children can’t reach it or lock the cabinet. Keep hazardous products in their original containers. Never store them in cups, soda bottles, or other containers that would normally contain food or drink. Be careful when using a hazardous product. Always keep it out of children's reach. If you are interrupted while using the product, take it with you. Always read the warning labels. If your child is accidentally poisoned, the first thing a doctor needs to know is the identity of the poison. The label will also tell you what
immediate first aid you can give. Handle all cleaning products carefully for your own safety and the safety of your family.
