As energy supplies tighten in response to the Iranian oil production shortfall, the impact is being felt around the United States. Gasoline allocations are being reduced and prices at the pump are rising. Commercial flights have been cancelled due to the short supply of jet fuel. President Carter is readying a standby plan involving restrictions on gasoline rationing. We are being reminded, as we were during the 1973 Arab oil embargo, of just how dependent we are on imported petroleum products. It is frustrating to us that America —a nation with such a wealth of natural resources and with the political freedom to choose different policy alternatives -*- could be so hampered by events so far from our own shores. One of the courses which we could pursue is the development of alternate fuel sources from the various resources we find so abundantly. Over the past three years. 1 have worked hard to promote the production and use of fuel from our agricultural resources. But we have other alternatives, too. One of the most commonly overlooked potential sources of energy is the garbage in our cities. Technologies to convert this municipal solid waste to energy are available and have been used for many years in Western Europe. But in America. city garbage usually has been disposed of by burning, landfill or ocean dumping. As we work to clean up our environment and as land becomes more scarce, public officials are increasingly examining ways in which solid waste from urban centers can be turned into valuable energy. More than 200 million tons of municipal solid waste will be generated annual y by 1985. with about 112 million tons of that being technically feasible for conversion to energy sources From that material, we could produce energy equivalent to 48 million barrels of oil annually. By 1995, we could be producing some 158 million barrels of oil equivalent from city garbage, according to a recent government report. Additionally, the garbage recovery process would yield a great deal of non-renewable material, such as iron and aluminum, while conserving the energy now used to process those materials. And the currently costly process of urban waste disposal would yield beneficial byproducts in an environmentally accepted way. Scientists at Purdue University have developed a process of urban waste treatment which yields 57 gallons of ethyl alcohol from each ton cf city garbage. The Purdue process is still in the pilot plant stage, and won t be commercially viable using garbage as a feedstock for a few years. But if we provide adequate support for that research, the process could be a viable alternative for cities which are ~V. f Used Car i ISPECIALSiI ARE IN THE SPOTLIGHT at McCORMICK MOTORS 79 Chev. now beginning the planning for waste disposal projects. Federal policies could encourage cities to examine the alternative of energy production from garbage*, but at present there are no such programs. No economic incentives are offered to promote the use of municipal solid waste energy systems on a broad scale Including city garbage, crop residues and wood waste, the United States now has about one billion tons of cellulosic materials available for alcohol production every year. That could potentially produce enough fuel and chemicals to replace half of the oil we import. Given the current world energy situation, do we dare continue to overlook this important alternative?
