Music, Sunday school teaching important to a church
Ron Herr is music minister “My responsibility is to the congregation. Their preparation through the heart of the church is through music.” So states Ron Herr, minister of music of the Leesburg Grace Brethren Church. Hprr, who resides at r 1 Hickory Estates, Warsaw, has been minister of music at the church for over a year. He feels music holds a very important role in the spiritual guidance of a church. He commented, “It’s a lot of responsibility. The responsibility isn’t so much visual as it is spiritual. I take my responsibility seriously. It’s one that God’s given me.” Herr added, “I just have to do my best with what God has given me.” He has a variety of duties involving music in the church. These include : Being in charge of the choir; overseeing the music committee in the church; leading congregational singing; and playing the piano and organ. Herr said, “I have total responsibility for the music of the church.” The choir is made up of between 12 and 24 adults. Henselects the choir music to be sung each week. The music committee selects special music for the church. Each member is responsible for providing special music at the morning and evening services for one month. Herr explained, “We try to decide the music aspect of the service. We try to incorporate new ideas, new songs. We try to arrive at some kind of mood the audience (congregation) has.” Herr went on to say, “We try to the keep the music as organized as possible. All the music is Christ centered.” Recently, the church has gone towards more contemporary music using tape background. Taped music, Herr feels, gives the impression of full orchestration. Another benefit of taped background music, said Herr, is to add accompaniment. He commented, “A lot of us aren't good accompanists. We can accompany congregational singing, but not soloists.”

gj|| m JlJrey fml ~ MUSIC ISIMPORTANT — As minister of music at the Leesburg Grace Brethren Church, Ron Herr, r 1 Hickory Estates, Warsaw, has a variety of music related duties. One of these is picking out music for the church choir. » Herr also plays the church piano and organ, heads up the music committee and leads congregational singing.
Members of the music committee. besides Herr, include: Becky Sherman, Fern Quine. Karen Loher and Shelly Reeve. All the members are selected by the congregation. It meets each quarter of the year. Talented Church The church, said Herr, is fortunate in its musical talent. Overall, the church has three pianists, three organists and two song leaders.
Dan Gehrke acts as head organist. Dee Caton is the head pianist. She also plays the organ. Becky Sherman and Helen Seerist play the piano. Ron Smals acts as song leader with Herr. Ralph Burns, selects his own hymns for each service.
Member 3 Years Herr and his wife, Judy, have been members of the church for three years. Both Mr. and Mrs. Herr sang in the church choir, which was how he came to be picked minister of music. Mrs. Herr still sings in the choir. Herr has been playing the piano since kindergarten. He took 10 years of piano lessons and about five years of organ lessons. He sang in the college choir at Grace College, where he also
sang in a mixed octet and quartet. Besides his music duties, Herr teaches a Sunday school class for college students. Mrs. Henworks with the church girls’ group, the SMM, teaching fourth, fifth and sixth grades. Mr. and Mrs. Herr both work for the United Telephone Company . They have no children More Involvement When asked if there were any goals he would still like to reach concerning music in the church, Herr replied, “I would like to see more people involved in the music program. There’s a lot of musical interest in the church, but we don’t have those people who want to participate in church music.” He added, “We do have an excellent program, but maybe we need to reevaluate. Music is a relatively easy way to serve the Lord.” The Leesburg Brethren Church has approximately 100 members.

Teacher enjoys experience Mrs. Delbert (Bertha) Moneyheffer, Milford, is an experienced Sunday School teacher. She has taught various ages between the nursery level and third graders in the past 20 years. During her years of teaching she has been children’s director three times. “Fve enjoyed seeing children grow up and watching them alter they leave the church. I’ve enjoyed it,” exclaimed Mrs. Moneyheffer. Teaching, she has learned, takes patience and repetition of stories to get the point across to the children. “You need to be a dedicated Christian yourself and understand children to teach them,” stated Mrs. Moneyheffer, “Some children don’t grasp what you are trying to teach them at the same rate as others ” She first started teaching at Bethel Church of the Brethren,
objective of increasing spiritual growth and strengthening Christian life expression. The Christian Education Committee of Grace Lutheran Church will meet on Wednesday, March 2,1. at 7:30 p.m. in the home of Bruce Grindle, Syracuse. The committee is also planning a Pentecost play to be presented to ' the congregation and the summer vacation church school program. Community Lenten Wors hip on March 18 The movie “Pilgrims Progress” will be featured at the Community Lenten Worship service sponsored by the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association, to be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, at 7 p.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church. Milford, when the children’s director convinced her she could teach if she put forth the effort. Since then “once you get in it you don’t get out very easily,” commented Mrs. Moneyheffer. She has only taught the children’s classes, which she prefers because she feels the children are “easier to teach and I enjoy watching the children,” she remarked. “They learn better than the older ones. ’ ’
Looking back over the years she remarked on how teaching has become easier, since the children change over the years and the methods of teaching have changed.
She has no plans to stop teaching, in fact she plans on
