Valley takes Wawasee, then sectional crown
By DOUG WALKER BOURBON — The Wawasee Warriors’ 1978-79 basketball season came to an abrupt halt Friday evening as they were upset by the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings 63-60 in Triton Sectional action. Coach Mike Jones’ squad finished the season with a respectable 13-8 record. The Vikings, now 10-13, followed up their victory over the Warriors with another upset win, this time a 58-46 triumph over the Warsaw Tigers, to give Tippecanoe Valley its first sectional championship. Wawasee ran into trouble early in the contest as the Vikings jumped out to a quick 12-4 advantage, forcing the Warriors to play come-back basket ba the very onset of the game. Sparked by guard Allen Utter, Valley held a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors fought back in the second quarter and cut the Viking lead to one at 29-28 by half-time. At that point, most of the fans in the Triton gym were probably expecting to see the Vikings fall apart in the second half. If regular season statistics meant anything, Wawasee clearly had a superior team and the Vikings had made a habit throughout the season of blowing large leads. Unfortunately for the Warriors and their followers, this was not to be. Valley made the third quarter a virtual rerun of the* first, as they completely dominated play, and at one point led by as many as 11 points. Occasionally the Warriors would make a move that might have shifted the momentum in their direction —a Matt Strombeck steal, a Lantz-to-Simpson alleyoop for two points — but the Vikings would immediately respond with a basket of their own, usually scored by Utter or forward Scott Tilden. Valley carried a 47-38 lead into the game’s final quarter. With time running out in the fourth quarter, Wawasee staged another comeback, but it was to fall just short. With 11 seconds left on the clock, the Warriors had pulled to within a pair of points at 62-60. The Vikings, however, controlled the ball, and Wawasee was forced to foul forward Mike Coplen. Coplen hit the first of his two free throws to effectively put out the fire and wrap up a 63-60 Viking victory. Warrior center Mark Simpson led all scorers with 31 points, a

Yellow Jackets win again The Syracuse Junior High School wrestling team members traveled to Nappanee last Tuesday and overpowered their opponents 66-49. This was their fourth win in a row against no losses. Kevin Garden, Steve Dunithan and Ron Martin started the Yellow Jackets off right by pinning their opponents. In all matches the Syracuse team accumulated nine pins and won four matches by decision. As in the last two meets, the Yellow Jackets came down to the last two matches needing wins to preserve the victory. Jeff Thom and Pat Hare responded by pinning their opponents to remain undefeated. Thorn and Hare are the leading wrestlers on the team as each has three pins and a decision to his credit. Mark Curry and Steve Dunithan are also undefeated this season. Other Syracuse wrestlers winning by pins were Clint Cardin, Steve Kaufman and Kevin Blade. Yellow Jackets winning by decision were Ron Easley, Ron Turner, Brian Kistler and Mike Cavender.
