Wrestling begins at Lakeland Youth Center

Wrestling coach Terry Frank is announcing the following information for the youth center wrestling for the 1979 season. The annual Lakeland area wrestling program for 16-year-olds and under is just around the corner. Bantam wrestling is for eight years and under, born in 1971 and later; midgets, nineand 10years, born 1969-1970; juniors, 11 and 12, born 1967-1968; intermediates. 13 and 14 years, born 1965-1966; and advanced, 15 and 16 years, "born 1963-1964. Frank says this year will see . events in a new facility with six v .wrestling mats and plenty of space, plus a skill development program to be initiated. This program will specifically start with certain wrestling skills to be learned and developed by wrestlers. As a wrestler masters a group of wrestling skills, he will be awarded a colored ribbon to show

his progress. Wrestlers then will work on mastering other wrestling skills and advance on to another ribbon category of achievement. Also new this year will be formation of a competitive club and tournaments. Practice Schedule The practice schedule will include Thursday, March 15; Tuesday, March 20; Thursday, March 22; Tuesday, March 27; Thursday, March 29; Tuesday, April 10; Thursday. April 12; and Tuesday, April 17. Wrestlers should meet in the new gym at the school at 6:30 p.m. on each practice night, dressed ready to wrestle. At 7:30, wrestlers should be picked up in the new gym reception area. Parents are welcome to stay and watch any practice, or wait in the reception area. Blanks are available at the youth center to sign for this season in wrestling.

Scott Arnold named most valuable swimmer

After sending four swimmers to the state meet last week end at Ball State University. Muncie, the Wawasee High School boys’ swimming season finished on a high note. The swimmers were recognized last night (Tuesday). Coming away with the top awards were the following swimmers — Scott Arnold, most valuable; John Pifer. 110 per cent effort award; and Troy Webb, most improved. Arnold, captain of the team, was one of the four swimmers who traveled to the state. For his season efforts, the senior broke a school record in the 200 freestyle event with a time of 1:54.1. He also was a member of the 400 freestyle relay team which broke a school record of 3:26.4. Other members of the record breaking relay team were Tracy Bartow. Phillips, 200 East Boston Street. Syracuse, was transported to Goshen Hospital early Tuesday morning by the Syracuse EMS for injuries sustained in an early morning one-car crash on the Huntington Road south of U.S. 6. He was listed in serious condition. Phillips told officers he was blinded by bright lights, and his auto traveled some 60 feet off the roadway and head on into a utility pole.
