Warriors go on warpath for 87-56 romp over Chargers

By DOUG WALKER Playing perhaps their most impressive game since they destroyed Carroll, 84-56, on November 18th, the Wawasee Warriors closed out their regular season in awesome form Friday night with an 87-56 romp over the West Noble Chargers. The win, the Warriors’ fourth in their last five games, upped Wawasee’s record to 13-7 under first-year coach Mike Jones. West Noble finished its season with a 3-16 mark. The game’s outcome was never in question from the very beginning, when the Warriors jumped out to a 10-2 lead. West Noble fought back to cut the margin to six points (the closest they were Jo get all evening) at one time, but Wawasee held an 18-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The game was, for all intents and purposes, over five minutes into the second quarter, as the Warriors scored 19 of the first 23 points and eventually carried a whopping 46-18 lead into the locker room at half-time. The best was yet to come. Wawasee came as close to literally blowing a team off the court as is possible early in the third quarter, as they scored 18 unanswered points to take a & nearly unbelievable 64-18 lead. The lead soon grew to 50, at 75-25, and Coach Jones used the opportunity to give his reserves a chance to see varsity action. This gave the Chargers the opportunity to make the score somewhat less humiliating and West Noble put on a fairly impressive offensive performance in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Warriors 29-10, to cut the Wawasee lead to 87-58 by the end of the ballgame. Mark Simpson led the Warriors with 27 points to cap off what has been an excellent season for him. Among the area’s leaders all year long, the 6’7” senior (actually he’s now' 6’B’’, though the official rosters don’t indicate the increase) piled up a total of 77 points in his final three regularseason games. Junior guard Bart Bowser added 15 points, while Mark Lantz, w'ho missed the Warriors’ last game with a pulled leg muscle, chipped in 14. The 6’5” senior forward made the most of an injury-filled season to also rank as one of the area’s’Top offensive players. Other Warriors in the scoring column were Mark Sumpter with 11 points. Jay Kaiser with six, Mike Kissinger with five, Eric Shepherd with four, Kevin Smallwood and Jeff Sylvester had two each, and Steve Swope had one. Mark Wagoner and John
