Property reassessment study is completed
A study of one per cent of the parcels of real estate in Indiana determining the effects erf the reassessment program has been completed by the state budget agency and state board of tax commissioners, according to William F. Marvel, Indiana Farm Bureau legislative coordinator. The following data indicates what the study showed in relationship to the assessed values by county of the new reassessment over the period before reassessment. In the prior reassessment, 1967 values were used. In the present reassessment, 1975 values were used. In Kosciusko County increases in reassessment as per study of one per cent of parcels of property show: 71.55 per cent in residential, 97.13 per cent in farm and 79.54 in business. Consider Points Marvel says several points should be considered when the information is evaluated. 1 A one per cent study of parcels may not be a reliably accurate figure upon which to base final conclusions. 2 There is considerable variation in increases in assessed values from one county to another. This may be due to a poor job of« reassessment in the prior reassessment and or a poor job on this reassessment. For example, if land was previously underassessed, the present percentage figure may look large. However, the actual dollar figure may not be far out of line compared to what is happening in other counties where the assessment was more correctly done in the 1967-68 reassessment. 3 Some changes in the classes Firemen respond to Schacht Rubber call Syracuse Volunteer Firemen responded to a call at 7:03 a.m. on Thursday for an overheated oil heater. Water was used to cool the unit containing oil which had apparently overheated, and firemen returned to the station at Ba.m. Webster units respond to early evening fire Members of the North Webster Fire Department responded to a fire call at 8:11 p.m. on Saturday ,Feb. 17. to the David Clayton residence located about onefourth of a mile north of North Webster on the Syracuse-Webster Road. Damage was estimated at $15,000 with most of the damage confined to the utility room. It was thought the fire started in a dryer or well pump. of property occur each time a reassessment is completed. Much of the change is in the relationship of personal property and real estate. In some counties, more property is out on the farm and in real estate. In other mere industrialized counties, the large percentage of the total assessed value may be in personal property. 4 Hie amount of increases in property taxes paid by individual taxpayers is not necessarily related to the reassessment percentage increase. Marvel explains that whatever happens in this respect in the 1979 session of the Indiana General Assembly will be important. If controls over local government spending are continued in place by this general assembly, taxpayers will not see any increase in number of taxation dollars they pay, or at least little increase. This is because, with controls on, the assessed value increases and the tax rate should decrease. School funding also has a bearing on this. Under present law, most dollar increases to operate public schools must come from the state general fund. Syracusean arrested in Topeka raid A Syracuse man, 19-year-old Randy J. Oglesbee, was one of 25 persons, including eight juveniles, arrested last Friday night in a raid by law enforcement agencies at the corner of Harrison and Lake streets in Topeka at 11 p.m. The juveniles, four boys and four girls ranging in age from 1417 years, were charged with juvenile delinquency and were turned over to their parents. The adults were charged with frequenting a common nuisance. One was also charged with possession of a controlled substance. MOVE IN BEFORE SETTLEMENT?
The situation is this. Your home is for sale. A prospect wants to buy it, but says, "I like it, I want it. But I will not have the money for a couple of months. Can I move in until we finalize the sale?" One of the best ways to kill a sale is to allow a prospective buyer to move in a considerable time before settlement. Often when this occurs, it is difficult to get him to go to settlement. He may keep finding things wrong with the house, keep insisting they be fixed, or even worse demand that an adjustment be made in price. Sometimes the result is even more disastrous. The seller becomes disgusted with all the alleged complaints and calls the

whole sale off. He must then start all over again. In my opinion, it is better to let a house sit empty than to let a prospective buyer rttove in before closing the sale. Although it is not good for a house to be empty, it's still a faster and surer way of selling it with the least trouble. The Beer Bunch will WORK FOR YOU.
