Women's college ball back at Wawasee
The Lakeland Youth Center and the Wawasee Boosters, Inc., will be sponsoring women’s college basketball once again at Wawasee High School. The rematch of last year’s battle is set for Monday, March 5, at 7 p.m. The Adrian CoHege Bulldogs (1978 Michigan Small College Runners-up) will meet the Franklin College Grizzlyettes (1978 Indiana Small College State Champs). These two teams, ably coached by two of the midwest’s leading sipall college coaches, will exhibit the skills that earned them their state recognition. Local area talent is well represented on both teams by stand-out high school stars. These girls are Barb Brouwer of Wawasee and Kim Cunningham of West Noble, playing for Adrian; and Judi Warren (Indiana’s 1976 Miss Basketball) of Warsaw and Tammy Schumm of Wawasee, playing for Franklin. Half-time activities Will feature the Wawasee optional gymnastics team in a floor exercise exhibition. All indications point toward

Four Wawasee swimmers to state
Four Wawasee High School swimmers will be competing in the state swimming meet this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23 and 24, at Ball State University, Muncie. Competing on the state level will be Steve Rosenkrantz, Scott Arnold and Tracy Bartow, all seniors and Greg Carpenter, junior. All four broke school records at sectional competition last Saturday at Elkhart. Rosenkrantz qualified in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly events. He, along with Arnold, Bartow and Carpenter also qualified in the 400 freestyle relay. Rosenkrantz’s scores were as follows: 50F, :23.2, seventh in sectional; 1008, :55.9, second in sectional; and in the relay, 3:36.4, second in sectional. Other Records Broken Four other school records were broken at the sectional. In the 200 freestyle, Arnold captured sixth place with a time of 1:54.1. In the 200 medley, Carpenter took sixth place with his time of 2:11.9. And, in the 100 freestyle, it was Arnold with a time of :51.2, giving him fifth place. Bartow took seventh place in the 500 freestyle with his time of 5:17.9. Overall, Wawasee placed fifth out of 12 schools at the sectional with 104 points. Goshen was the top winner with 308 points. Coach Tim Caldwell commented. “We placed the highest we’ve ever placed. He added, “It (the sectional), went about as well as we expected for most teams. We did a lot better than we thought we would. We’re happy.’’ One highlight was the Warrior victory over rival Warsaw. Caldwell said, “We beat Warsaw for the first time. This was one of our goals.’’ Warsaw only qualified one shimmer, Melvin Hawkins. A Good Chance This is the first time in three years Wawasee is sending a member of the swimming team to the state. Bill Rosenkrantz, Steve’s brother, went to the state as a diver in 1976. What are Wawasee’s chances? Caldwell_said, “When you get down to the state, you’re talking about the best. We’ve got as good a chance as anybody." Wawasee will be competing in all sprint events which Caldwell feels is a plus. “Whoever swims the best is going to get in. Whoever makes mistakes isn’t.’’ The swimmers will qualify at 4 p.m. Friday. The finals are set for 2 p.m. on Saturday. 5-9 Season Overall, the Warriors had a season of 5-9. Caldwell said this doesn’t reflect on the swimming, however. “We never really swam with a full squad,” he explained. “When we had to swim fast, we did. ” At the beginning of the season, first year coach Caldwell hoped to break 11 school records. The Warriors ended up by breaking all but four. Next Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m., the swimmers will be honored in the high school auditorium. The Warrior wrestlers will also be recognized.
