Simpson hits career high —
Warriors defeat Northfield in thrilling 60-57 overtime
By DOUG WALKER Mark Simpson exploded for a career-high 30 points while Mark Sumpter came up with some key defensive plays Friday evening as the Wawasee Warriors rolled to their third straight win with an exciting 60-57 overtime victory over the Northfield Norsemen. Wawasee’s record now stands at 12-7. Bart Bowser and Simpson combined for all of the Warriors points in the first quarter and Wawasee held a slim 14-13 lead at the end of the period. The second quarter saw the Warriors increase the margin to as many as seven points, but the Norse had pulled to within four at 30-26 at half-time. Wawasee got off to an excellent start in the third quarter, and, sparked by Simpson and Bowser, jumped out to a 42-32 lead. Northfield came fighting back, however, and the Warriors had a not-so-comfortable 46-42 advantage as the game headed into the final period. The fourth quarter was basically a defensive battle, as only 16 total points were scored, * and the Norse had tied the score at 52-52 and owned the ball as the game went into its final seconds. With five seconds left. Northfield center Duane Wilcox put up a potential game-winning shot, but it was blocked by Sumpter and the game went into overtime. Simpson canned a pair of field goals in the overtime while Sumpter connected on two free throws and blocked another Wilcox shot to give Wawasee the eventual 60-57 victory. Simpson’s 30 points led all scorers, while Bowser (who was 6-of-7 from the field) ended up with a total of 14. Jay Kaiser and Mark Wagoner contributed six apiece and Sumpter chipped in with four. Wilcox led Northfield with 22 points. The Warriors were without the services of senior forward Mark Lantz, who has been suffering
Sectional preview
By DOUG WALKER The second phase of the 1978-79 high school basketball season will get underway in a little more than a week, when the 64 sectional tournaments open up all over the state. The Wawasee Warriors will probably be considered co-favorites as they head into the Triton Sectional next week. Other teams competing in the tournament are the host Trojans, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings, the Rochester Zebras and the Warsaw Tigers. If one takes an objective look at each of the five teams’ chances of capturing the sectional, he must immediately place the Triton Trojans in a “no chance”,category. The Trojans were a less than impressive team on February 8, when eight players, including scoring star Brent Morris, quit and or were kicked off the squad for rule infractions. Now basically a junior varsity team, Triton has neither the experience or the depth to defeat whatever team they draw in the first round. The Tippecanoe Valley Vikings have to be considered the dark horse of the tournament. Though their record (currently 6-12) wouldn’t indicate it, the Vikings have lost a number

with a pulled leg muscle. Lantz, averaging nearly 18 points a game, should see action next week In junior varsity action, the Wawasee Warriors defeated
of close games and are capable of pulling off a major upset. Center Charles Secrist and forward Scott Tilden are offensive mainstays for Valley. It would be difficult to pick a clear-cut favorite out of the three remaining teams. The Rochester Zebras have had an excellent 14-4 season and have a trio of fine players in Dave Hiatt, Greg Carrand Arik Carr. The Warsaw Tigers have used a balanced scoring attack to roll up a fine 13-6 mark. Led by center Randy Heisler and guard Shane Hartle, the Tigers are certainly capable of giving any area team a run for their money. Though the Wawasee Warriors' record is slightly less impressive at 12-7, their play in recent weeks clearly gives them a claim to co-favorite going into the tournament. The Warriors are fortunate enough to have the tournament’s two top offensive players in 6’7” center Mark Simpson and 6’5” forward Mark Lantz, but will also need good performances from forwards Mark Sumpter and Mark Wagoner and guards Jay Kaiser, Bart Bowser, Matt Strombeck and Jeff Sylvester. The regular season match-ups between the Tigers, Zebras and Warriors give no real indication
