Valdosta State's assistant basketball coach, Roger Fleetwood, was recruiting Valley’s Eric Alspaugh, when he found out that Tippecanoe Valley’s head basketball coaching job would be open. As fate would have it. the job of varsity coach is now his. The 28-year old Fleetwood , is a native of Nashville, Indiana, and played basketball at Brown County High School. S> A former Valdosta Stzze player, Fleetwood became a. graduate assistant for two years, while working on his masters degree. He was also an assistant coach at South Putnam one year in Greencastle, Indiana and spent two years at Southwestern in Hanover, Ind., also as an assistant. According to his wife Carol, “that year at Greencastle was a year to remember." Roger pulled the ligaments in his leg during one of his league games and spent the rest of the year in a leg cast. “Every game we had to bring a stack of pillows to prop
his leg up.” explained Carol. The B-team he was coaching that year did win the Christmas tourney, which made up for all the hassle of t he cast he carried with him that season. Why did he leave Valdosta? “From recruiting, I found out I enjoy high school more,” explained Fleetwood. “College players know that they’re good, which is why they were recruited. In high school they have to work harder to get anywhere later, and are more enthusiastic," says Fleetwood. Head Coach James Dominey, of Valdosta State College says of Fleetwood, “He’s by far one of the most popular players and people to come through this program. He'll do well coaching in high school.” Roger and his wife Carol, have a two-year old daughter, Julie. Carol is teaching “special reading" classes to grades 4 thru 8 at the Akron Elementary and Jr. High. This year's team has really pleased the new coach. Mainly because he’s never had this much height on a team. Fleet wood works a lot on defense, and hopes the fans accept his style of coaching. Fleetwood's goal is to build a program right up through the grades so that every year they’re. competitive. The popular new coach has high hopes for a sectional title this year!!
