Syracusean charged on five counts
A Syracuse man, Timothy C. Morganthaler. 20, r 4, a diesel mechanic employed in Goshen, was apprehended by law enforcement authorities early last Wednesday, following a 20-mile high speed chase from Goshen through Syracuse where he lost control of his vehicle and went into a snowbank at the edge of Syracuse. No reason was given by Morganthaler for the chase, ending about one mile from his home. He was booked at the Elkhart County jail to await arraignment in Goshen City Court on five charges. The charges are: Driving while intoxicated, illegal consumption of alcoholic beverages, speeding, disregarding an automatic signal light, and fleeing law enforcement officers. Morganthaler, driver of a 1969
Cadillac, was observed running a redlight at Madison and Fifth in Goshen shortly after midnight. Patrolmen clocked the vehicle at 62 mph in a 30-zone in the 300 block of East Madison. A radar unit clocked the vehicle at nearly 100 miles per hour on Lincolnway East near the Dairy Queen location. The chase continued through Benton to CR 33 north of Syracuse where the Cadillac pulled away from the officers and a radio dispatch was sent with Indiana State police officers taking part in the chase. Syracuse officer Dan Gallmeier joined the chase at U.S. 6 north of Syracuse, through the business district of Syracuse on SR 13 to Palm Drive and Oakwood Drive at the southeast edge of Syracuse near Oakwood Park. State officers had set up a road block on SR 13 about one mile south of Syracuse, however, Morganthaler, who had headed
