Play an important role —

He’s ready in an emergency

Oliver Hibschman, Syracuse, is the board chairman of the Church of God, Syracuse and chairs the council meeting and the two annual business meetings of the church. He also meets with the five commissions of the church when he is needed. He is the one who decides what needs to be done in emergency situations, when there is not enough time to call the board together. One instance when he makes the decision is during the winter months when the roads get bad and he decides if there should be church or not. But, he added the church council does make the majority of all the decisions. His term as board chairman is for one year and runs August 1 to July 31. Hibschman was elected by the council of the church. To be a board chairman you have to be on the administrative council before being eligible, He has also been elected as an elder for a twoyear term. The five commissions he oversees are: Evangelism and mission commissions, which finds special speakers for meetings during the year and finds someone to fill the pulpit if the pastor can not be there. ' Lay activities commission, whose duties are to appoint various committees who deal with the kitchen area, select the teachers for mid-week youth group services and set up the church calendar. Christian education commission selects teachers for the primary classes, is in charge <of the Sunday School superintendent, junior superintendent and the assistant superintendent. . Property and management commission covers the trustees who take care of the general repairs of the church grounds and buildings along with the upkeep of the three vans and busses, also making sure there are bus drivers for Sunday morning And the stewardship and finance commission which takes care of the financial end and prepare the annual church budget. These councils then, after their meeting the week before, bring any business they have discussed before the church administrative board, where it will be considered. Hibschman is an adult Sunday school teacher and has served as deacon, trustee and on the building committee before the

New organ lends beauty

A new concept in church organ music can be heard each Sunday morning at Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Syracuse. Last September, the church installed a new digital computer organ, built by The Allen Organ Company of Pennsylvania. Russell E. Sonafrank 11, church organist, finds this organ to be quite similiar to the pipe organ in its sound quality. He said, “The tone production can be so precise. It’s the closest sound to a pipe organ without having a pipe organ.” All the tones used are made by a computer. By either pushing buttons, or inserting special computer cards, an entire orchestra can be recreated. Sonafrank commented, “The organ is virtually limitless in the things it can do. It never needs tuning.” Under $40,000 The organ, which costs just under $40,000, came to Saint Andrew’s through the efforts of an organ committee, headed up by Chris Koher Other members included: Dale Allen, Peter Blue. Debbie Dieterly, Virginia Ditmer, David Jones, Norma Longenecker, Kathi Myers, Paul Rush and Cynthia Thornburg. Also, Sonafrank and pastor Phil Frew. On Sunday, June 4, 1978, a church congregation conference was held with the final vote going for the digital organ. “The response has been overwhelming,” said the organist. Pledges were raised through the finance committee, chaired by Hubert Anglemyer. The church choir also sponsored several projects. The old organ, a pipe organ, had been used since the early 1900’s. “It had served us long and well,” said Sonafrank. One of the organ's problems was its smallness. Now. with the new organ, the music can be heard in the entire sanctuary. Sonafrank said, “The sounds can be heard at the same time. That is very important to congregational singing.” Exciting Instrument Sonafrank is finding the organ a fun instrument to play. He said. “It’s thrilling to sit Sunday mornings to play this instrument. Congregational singing has improved because of it. It’s an exciting instrument to play." But, the organist added, “I’m still learning. It’s a matter of getting different combination of sounds.” The organ was dedicated

Prepares Hymns As church organist. Sonafrank has many important responsibilities. He said. “One of the responsibilites is to prepare the hymns for Sunday morning service.” The pastor will select the hymns, while Sonafrank chooses the service music. “I like to select music that fits the particular season of the liturgical year," he said. “The prelude, it should fit so the whole service goes together One word he does not like to see associated w-ith church music is "special.” “The music should all be special.
