Last Saturday at Concordia High School the Wawasee Warriors wrestling team was regional runner-up with 100 points, placing close behind Fort Wayne Wayne who scored 107 points. Homestead High School came in third with 85 points. Fifteen other teams competed. He then came back to win 11-7, scoring all of the 11 points in the last minute of the match. According to Smith this elevated Hammaker into the finals where he finished runner-up to Leon Williams of Fort Wayne North. 7-2 Season The wrestling team finished the season with a 7-2 mark. Wawasee win! impressive victory over Panthers
By DOUG WALKER Mark Simpson scored 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds Friday evening to lead the Wawasee Warriors to an impressive 50-47 win over the North Wood Panthers. The win upped the Warrior record to 11-7, while the Panthers now stand at 7-10 on the season. Wawasee got off to a good start, sparked by the large contingent of Warrior fans in the gymnasium who rose from their seats and let out a deafening roar as the starting line-up was announced and didn't let up until Simpson scored the Warriors' first points nearly three minutes later and Wawasee held a 17-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. Simpson carried his impressive offensive performance into the second quarter (the 6'7” senior had 16 first-half points) and the Warrior advantage had grown to 10 at 37-27 by half-time. Wawasee went into a scoring drought in the third quarter (which has been a trouble spot for the Warriors all season) and North Wood had cut the lead to 4439 as the game headed into the final period. Mark Lantz and Matt Strombeck came on strong in the fourth quarter and Wawasee easily came away with the eventual 59-47 win. The Warriors wrapped up the game in spectacular fashion as Simpson came up with a two-fisted slam dunk with 30 seconds left, followed almost immediately by a Strombeck steal and lay-up. Lantz was the Warrior’s second leading scorer with 15 points, while Bart Bowser used some outstanding outside shooting to end up with 10. Strombeck contributed seven points, followed by Mark Sumpter with four, Jay Kaiser with two and Mark Wagoner with one. In junior varsity action. Eric Shepherd hit five free throws in the second overtime to lead Wawasee to an exciting 57-52 victory over North Wood. Tom Troup lead the Warriors with 17 points. FRIDAY’S GAME AGAINST NORTHFIELD On Friday. Feb. 16, the Wawasee Warriors will be hosting Northfield. Doors will be opened at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity game starting at 6:30 and the varsity game starting at 8 p.m. Pre-sale tickets may be bought by students only at $1 each from the athletic office during the school day Friday.
