Syracuse Christians rally for church freedom
The separation of church and state — this is an issue currently being raised by the Indiana State Legislature and a group of citizens from the Grace Bible Church and the Syracuse Christian School, led by Rev. David R. Haifley, church pastor. Haifley, along with 90 some followers from the Syracuse community, rallied in Indianapolis January 16 with other Indiana church groups to speak out in favor of three legislative bills. These bills, called the “church freedom package,” would change certain state requirements being imposed on church schools and day care centers. Haifley said approximately 5,000 persons attended the rally. Equivalent Education The first bill deals with equivalent education. Under this law, it is the duty of a parent, if his child attends a church school, .to see the child receives an education equivalent to that of a public school. ; This law was reworded last year, however, leaving the« determination of equivalency up to the Commission on General Education. Haifley commented, “This was voted through without many realizing what they were doing. • We started our school to get out of what was being taught in public schools.” Two areas the pastor is concerned about deal with evolution and the Bible. In the Christian school, the theory of creation is taught according to the Bible. Haifley added the Bible is not on the state required reading list. “We are law abiding citizens. If we can't teach the Bible, we can't abide by it.” A representative from the Indiana State Teachers Association, present at the rally, was reported to have said even though parents send their children to a private school, the state still has a compeling interest to ensure the children receive an adequate education. Day Care Bill The second bill deals with licensing of day care centers. Existing laws state “non profit organizations” operating schools

CHURCH FREEDOM PACKAGE — Rev. David R. Haifley, pastor of the Grace Bible Church and administrator of the Syracuse Christian School, is one of the protestors calling for passage of the “church freedom package” in the Indiana State Legislature. The package, made up of three bills, would change various restrictions imposed upon church schools and da> care centers. Haifley attended a rally in Indianapolis January 16.
and day care centers for preschoolers must be state licensed. Rev. Haifley would like to have this licensing eliminated. Haifley stated. “There are a lot of single parents raising children. The church looks upon this as a ministry, as one of the basic tenants of pure religion" The final bill involves unem-
ployment compensation requiring churches to pay unemployment taxes. The bill would exempt churches from paying these taxes. Haifley said, “There is no need of it. We pay our teachers all summer long.” He is concerned the state would then control who the church can hire and fire. Have To Fight The pastor said he felt it was his duty to become involved in the rally. “We have to fight it.” he. said. “It’s a matter of conviction. People who don't send children to a Christian school will be affected. too.” He found out about the rally 10 days before from an organization

DON’T JUST GO TO CHURCH; LEARN FROM IT people go to Church, it’s true. As part of their routines; An automatic thing to do, As though they were machines. Now every Sunday, there they are, So friends will see them there; Arriving in a shiny car, With brand new clothes to wear. But being there is all for nought, With value much in doubt; Unless we give some sober thought To what it’s all about. So help its benefits increase By keeping faith in view. And learn that inner joy and peace That Church can bring to you. —Gloria Nowak
