ONE YEAR AGO, JAN. 11.1978 The Cove Inn, 30-year-old restaurant on Lake Wawasee. closed its doors for the last time in November. Carl and Dorothy Hunziker, operators . of the ..restaurant, Sold the property to Mr. anaSMrs. Robert Wildman of Lake W’awasee and Indianapolis, who plan to convert the property adjacent to private use. They presently own lake front property adjacent to the Cove site. Fire destroyed Harper’s Beach Bar, Redman Park, Dewart Lake, early Tuesday morning.

PROPERTY TAX LOSES AT POU
According to a recent survey by Opinion Research Corporation for the U.S. Government on the average citizen’s opinion on taxes, it will-come as no surprise that the results showed that the least popular tax of all was the property tax. The purpose of the survey was to find out attitudes on the proposed value-added tax, property tax, income tax and sales tax. Although no particular tax received a resounding approval, ' it was a clear-cut message that American's major complaint with our fiscal system lies with the property tax. When queried as to which tax was the "least fair”, 45 per cent selected the property tax, the federal income tax

The building and contents, estimated at $50,000, were destroyed when fire broke out following an explosion in the furnace room of the structure. Board members announced the town has officially purchased the Syracuse Rubber Plant building located next to the present town hall on South Huntington Street. through the Rotary effort. A gym kahana was held Sunday on Syracuse Lake by the W’awasee Hardwater Riders Snowmobile Club with some 70 persons coming to observe and participate. A fourth generation group met on January 1 at the home of Mr and Mrs. Eugene Brown of northeast of Syracuse for the 93rd birthday anniversary of the latter’s father, Jesse Botts, now of Syracuse and formerly of Millersburg for many years. Mrs. Arthur J. Morris returned to her home on January 5 after visiting Mr. and Mrs. John Duy and sons, John and Carl, in Cleveland, Ohio.
10 YEARS AGO, JAN. 8,1969 The winter’s first “real’’ snowfall blanketed the area over the week end with a mixture of blessings woe: While skiiers found it delightful at. Mount Wawasee, it was the cause of numerous accidents reported all over the area. Sparks from a dehydrator were blamed for a fire at VyLactos Laboratories at 5:10 am. on Thursday where mechanical equipment was ablaze when firemen arrived. The annual reports of the Wawasee Boosters. Inc., show a total of $11,789.77 received from contributors with $10,933.56 disbursed for athletics, band and chorus uniforms and equipment, and a balance of $856.21 on hand. The Wawasee High School faculty, in an effort to win their first game this season, will play the WOWO Air Aces in the Wawasee gym on January 22. Mr. and Mrs. John Schacht are the parents of a daughter, AmyLynn, born on January 2. 20 YEARS AGO. JAN. 8,1959 Dr. John F. Young, superintendent of the Plymouth Com-, munity Schools, and Dean W’alker. a member of the Plymouth school board of trustees, will be principal speakers at the January 20 meeting of the Turkey Creek Township Parent-Teacher Association in the school cafeteria. Bids have been advertised for a new police car for the town marshals of Syracuse. The annual report of the Syracuse Fire Department for 1958 shows 21 calls in the town at an estimated damage of $5,500; 52 • calls in Turkey Creek township, $18,000; and 23 first aid calls. Dr. Wendell Shank, local optometrist, has been elected president of the SyracuseWawasee Chamber of Commerce for 1959. Work will start next week for installation of 12 boulevard lights in downtown Syracuse, to replace and increase the number of lights presently in use. Completion of CI-104 is the final step in the classroom work leading toward the designation of Certified Commercial Investment member of the REALTORS National Marketing Institute which will be awarded on the basis of the satisfactory submission of three self-study projects as well as a comprehensive examination. Fugitive charges filed against Webster man Fugitive charges from the state ° of Tennessee were added to other charges for Terry M. Hixson, 27, of North Webster following his arrest over the New Year holiday week end. Arrested by law authorities here on charges of public intoxication, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and resisting arrest Hixson was placed in the county jail at Warsaw. Charges were filed against the North Webster man who is alledged to have pulled a gun on an acquaintance with whom he was riding near Dunlap, Tenn., in June of 1978, when the driver refused to take him home, A scuffle ensued and shots fired,, striking the windshield of the truck in which the two were riding. While being held on December 31, notice was received that Hixson was wanted in Dunlap, Tenn., for kidnapping, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
