Play an important role —
There are many people involved in a church from the minister to janitor. Each of these play an important role in the structure of a church. During the next several weeks, these people will be featured in a special series. The first person to be considered is a minister. One of the more active ministers in the Syracuse community is Rev. Phil Frew, pastor of the Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church. Duties Os A Minister Rev. Frew outlined eight basic characteristics an effective minister must have. These include: Pastor — A minister must call at homes and hospitals and give counsel for personal problems. Prophet — A minister must preach at least once a week and serve as speaker to community groups Priest — He must lead worship; administer communion and baptism; and conduct marriages and funerals. Educator — A minister has to supervise programs and curriculum including youth programs and the church school. He is often called upon to teach. Administrator — A minister must oversee property worth thousands of dollars; oversee the church budget; call meetings; supervise other church employees; and schedule meetings and rooms for those who meet in the church. Agent for community improvement — He must be aware of community needs and be aware of meeting those needs. Sfcholar — A minister must always undergo in-service training in order to better serve his church. This involves taking refresher courses and keep reading and learning. Person — A minister should keep up with his own personal religious life. He must be a husband and father and play and have fun, too. This is a part of his work, whether or not he mows the lawn, or how he treats his children; these things are visible and can be a help to others. Job That’s Never Done Rev. Frew said a minister’s job is

one that will keep him busy 24 hours a day. He cojnmented, “It’s a job that’s never done. There’s always more to do. You end up by choosing between many important things.” How he deals with the important decisions he faces as a pastor, Rev. Frew said he chooses the ones dealing with a personal or family
START THE NEW YEAR BY DOING SOMETHING GOOD
HHHo one knows what this year will bring to each of us in terms of happiness, health, success or whatever: but fortunately we can control our 1 own actions. A good way to begin the year is to resolve, among other things, to go to your Church if you haven't been doing ,so. If you have, resolve to go one step farther and get involved with it. Contrary to popular belief, many Churches must operate on a very tight budget: and some of the loveliest ones you'll ever see are maintained almost entirely by volunteer help from the congregation. Remember that your Church does so much for you: and you should help and support it to the best of your ability. )/o u can do no finer deed at the start of the year, or at any other time.
